The ultimate Achievement for Non professionals

I've never heard of this before.  This sounds like my kind of sport!

Not as easy as it seems!

I remember this being a decent nudge

90 seconds per lap

30seconds per beer

8 mins total

do NOT go out too hard, you will hurt in ways unmanageable, so much that considering a TC and forcing a DSQ is the most honorable way to end it.

A sub 20 5km is one of my goals

Managed to get a 25.03 at my local parkrun not too long ago. that means i need to slice a minute off of my current pace. Seems impossible for me at this stage

I came down from 29min to 21. Then I gave up????

okee dokee let's get this back on track.

I always wondered how hard it could be to do a sub4 minute mile.

It's still tough, 94 people did it last year (although the mile is not normally run as a major track event anymore) - https://www.iaaf.org/records/toplists/middle-long/one-mile/outdoor/men/senior/2018?regionType=world&page=1&bestResultsOnly=true

Amateur achievements, are always the best when you can klap a pro at your game.

There is no better event than the beermile.

I did my first beer mile in 2001, the "Lion mile" at maties/coetzenburg. It is BRUTAL!

For olympic athletes there is a four year cycle. WC/Olympics/WC/blank. the blank year in 2013, Nick Symmonds (who came 5th in london 2012 1500m) set out to smash the 5min mark.

He made quite a public statement of going for it, and was going to bring his high level training regime and beer scientists to the party...He never got there.

and instead it went to this guy.

but just like Bannister's time not lasting things move on, quickly.

it now sits at #23 on the list, with the current record a ridiculous

If you want to hold the SA record.

Then it's down in 154 on the alltime list. a 5:47 held by a certain Elroy Gelant (at altitude nogal!). I'm not sure what his drinking is like, but he's rather quick on a tartan oval.

Hells bells... My mile record is 5:09... Nevermind 4 beers in between

Awesome thread. I have thought about this before and last year I set myself the goal of achieving three things before i turn 40 (now 15 months away).

a)Sub3 argus

b)sub 90 half marathon

c)2:11 800m

the thinking behind it all:

a) (never been in a decent enough group to do this), and my official best time of 2:55 is belieavable was admittedly on the 50km shortened route with a LOT of stops. but i can't really count that. Will most likely need to do some proper seeding races for next year and then the pressure will be on!

b)if you're counting half marathons in hours you're a hacker. my pb for this is about 93mins

c)this was my event at school, but I can't remember what my pb is. I love the 800m, so am going to try and beat the 1896 Athens winning olympic time. this is very achievable (i think, surely I'm less than 20% slower than Rudisha)

so far I'm on 0/3

2:55 argus

86:30 half marathon

3h03 Marathon

1:58 800m

3:58 1500m

The sub 1 hour 40km TT has always been my "amateur" success test.

Sub 1:30 21km as one of the other posters suggested.

Some stage races - Epic is tough - Joberg2c is easier but the last 2 days take a mental toll.

Finishing a 24 hour race without a nap has always been a fun mental challenge.

Sub 3 hour 100km race is a little soft - fast'n'flat races with big bunches make it too easy/variable. Goals have to be individual in my opinion.

All of this changes with age of course!

[emoji41] cracked 2 of those so I recon I'm done, thanks man [emoji6]

On a serious note a 1 hour 40k TT would be quite something, I managed to average over 40 one time at provincial champs and us 'timers' only rode like 23k's or something! Doubt I could have kept it up much longer.

Enough to podium but not win [emoji20]

AFAIK Paris-Roubaix ain't open to privateers and damn that would be something to do with an all backed or or store bought kit

Did it last year - 5am start from Campiegne, met up with the Sportif just before they closed the start at 9am and hit Roubaix velodrome in 9h. Not even that expensive :D

Then stay and watch the pros do it the next day.

Speaking of crazy things, I heard this morning someone cycled from Joburg to Howick, ran to PMB, broke his foot in the final km, and then did the Duzi. His mate had to carry the boat man-alone during the portages while this dude was on crutches. Same for the final day - their boat was so buggered they walked the full 20ish kms.

Madness!!

Had to dig up some history

2.51 Argus

74.20 half marathon

2.42 marathon

Don't wan't to spoil it by adding my track times. Let's just say I'm a carthorse when in comes to fast stuff.

ah. so you actually raced track athletics, that's a low percentile of the general population ...starting to blur the amateur lines there

(what was tougher, the 74 half or the 2:42 full?)
