They say one is never too old to learn. Well, I have been cycling for a bit now and I need to learn something urgently. I do roughly 7K a year in the Tanzanian rural area on anything from the public gravel roads to animal tracks. The surface vary from rocky to sandy. From smooth to heavy corrugation. And now one of my spokes on the rear wheel has popped. Needless to say, Tanzania does not have the typical modern 29er technology readily available. The wheel buckle so much that it is impossible to ride and I have a race early in April in South Africa. What do you guys and girls recommend?

Speak to me about a spare set of wheels and buy a truing stand and spend some time learning to fix it. I have a set of quick release non boost wheels with tires that will be available soon.

what exactly are you asking...?

Remove the broken spoke, measure it and your other ones (Rear wheel both sides are different lengths, front both are the same), order a few replacements with nipples and a spoke wrench.

Replace broken spoke and use a cable tie hack to true the wheel.

(If any of the above doesn't make sense then google/youtube are your friends).

As for an immediate fix, there aren't any that wont do further long term damage.

How to continue training? How to mcgyver a fix of sorts? Anything that may help reduce the suffering on the Ceder100Miler

what has popped? has the spoke broken or has the nipple broken?

You will need to replace the spoke ideally - but sometimes you can true the wheel to get it to run straight enough to ride again - but it will not be as strong as with all the spokes in.

Youtube is your friend when it comes to learning how to true the wheel - and you dont need a trueing stand for a field repair - it's easier with a zip tie on the seat stay.

Unless you have very few spokes, one broken spoke shouldn't allow the wheel to buckle so badly that you can't ride it. With disk brake you can ride a wheel that is buckled worse that rim brake but still I don't think one spoke should have this effect. How many spokes do your wheels have?

LWB and others. I also thought one spoke out of 32 wouldn't be so bad. How wrong I was! It is completely warped. V12, the spoke broke where it meets the nipple. It appears the balance of tension is all over the place. What is amazing, when I removed the tire, the warp got much worse   and no, I am not imagining things. I have trued wheels before without too much hiccups. I get the mechanicals involved, but this is out of the ball park.

I will see this afternoon if a local spoke man can help. Generally their spokes are much thicker than our modern types. If it passes through my hub without mods, its going in.

If it's that badly out then I would guess it's a drive side spoke?

1st prize would be to replace all your spokes as they are likely all going to starts going due toe the uneven tension. General rule of thumb is once 3 go rebuild the wheel.

As for rebuilding the wheel I would not suggest this if you haven't done it before. If you really must there plenty vids out there on the subject.

Recommend:  Come to SA early and get a bike shop to fix your wheel if you cannot get it done up there, else as others have said, many youtube's on truing a wheel and hacks with a broken spoke.

If you riding the race with mates, maybe they have a spare wheel you can use?
