Thank you for all the tips. Did some research last night and both Nextie and Light bicycle (both chinese) are really appealing to me, they have the dimensions i am looking for, just hope they are strong wheels. But the reviews are very good.

When is a rim too wide? for XC atleast. Is it a issue riding with enduro wheels on a XC bike?

Also is carbon really that much better than Alloy, i know the topic is weelllllll discussed but is it stronger than alloy, weight not being taken into consideration.

https://www.pinkbike.com/news/rim-widths-comparison-test-mountain-bike.html

also check this out...basically alludes to anything over 35 being too wide depending on tyre.

Perhaps also look at the Bontrager Line Elite or Pro 30 wheels - Elite is Alu, Pro is carbon. very decent value for money wheels with the specs you require...

Ag varkie, You don't need enduro wheels, you ride like a fairy. You even Wheelie like one.

The nexties and light bicycle wheels will probably be strong enough for your riding.

A mate if mine has broken Light Bicycle rims, but even I think he rides like a Neanderthal.

I got some Nextie rims for my wife's trail bike build.

I opted for their premium range which uses stronger carbon and chose enduro lamination (added 20g per rim) - Rims arrived each having been x-rayed and hand weighed with the weight in grams written on a card with each wheel.

Decals are water transfer so not stickers. Think it ended up being R7800 for rims wih DT Swiss spokes and brass nipples delivered to SA. Hubs I bought here and had Nick the Wheelbuilder  build the wheels.

Rims are 27mm internal and 391g and 392g respectively (or something like that) and rated for 150kg riders.

I've got the Nextie Premium rims and couldn't be happier.  Only had them for around six months or so, but I can't fault them at all, and have done some rough riding with them.

I was using a set of Arch Mk3 rims before this so was already getting the 'sort of wide' benefits, but the Nexties ride completely differently.  I notice this especially when going over rocks - they just track perfectly without being knocked around like the arches were over the same terrain.  Obviously they also have the usual carbon benefits of being faster to spin up, stiffer, blah blah, but it was the way they felt over rough ground which I wasn't expecting.

Ordered with DHL delivery, paid about R500 in customs and clearing and had them in my hands about a week after ordering.

Could not be happier with my choice.

Very interesting thanx morne, i feel a 30 to 32mm wide rim is more than sufficient for me. Thats probably external width

Depends on your tyre choice.

I went for 27mm internal on the wife's wheels as I do run 2.25" tyres on her bikes to keep weight down a bit and from experience 2.25" on 29mm internal was a bit on the edge for my liking, but still more than ample to run up to a 2.4" (Which is the maximum I'll ever throw on that bike for her)

Look at the below, the 2.25" Ibex tyre looks quite fat on the 27mm internal.

23-28mm internal width is ok for 2.2 to 2.4 tyres.

Wider rims make the tyre too square and that affects the bikes handling.

Eg I found the AMC Wide lightning too wide for the 2.2

A bit of feedback on the Nexties that I've built so far: everyone who has them, loves them.

They build up very well, with high, even tension, and look like they're lasting well.

The nice thing about them is they're manufactured to your specs. You choose the model, width, spoke count, graphics colour and matt or glossy finish, as well as UD, weave or 3k/12k carbon pattern.

At the moment they take around 2-3 weeks to manufacture and 2-3 weeks to ship - it's a bit of a wait unless you choose a vanilla option, but well worth it.

At around R4500 per rim, the value is very good.

One of the nicest things about these rims is the weight - 25mm ID MTB 29er rims come in between 300-310g each. Consider that a Crest rim weighs 365g.... that's light!
