This. In super gravity casing especially at 110kg. Stop buying lightweight tyres with shaite grip characteristics

you realise he rides in Potch.....

Ikon 2.35 front

ikon 2.2 rear and soak up the Horizon

Very interesting opinions, thanx guys. Even more confused now. Maybe Ikon 235 rear and Ardent Race 235 front?(110kg)

yeah that can work too. The high volume tyre on the back can be a godsend on rocky terrain.

also look into the new Pirelli range of tyres. I'm thinking the Scorpoion H on the front and the R for the rear should cover all your bases but I think they're only available in 2.2 locally at the moment but a 2.4 is in the range. Worth checking with your LBS

@ the OP.

Asking for tire advice on here is like asking what car to buy. All you are going to get is people telling you what they are riding on.

Rather maybe look at what your mates are on and what the LBS is stocking. I highly doubt they will have Magic Mary in stock seeing at you live in Potch and all and the likelyhood of them selling such a tire is unlikely.

and not just what your mates are using or LBS recommends but also understand what you want from the tyre.

Some heavy guys like the have a fast rolling tyre because its a bit less resistance to overcome and they get grip anyway at the higher pressures they can run.

Lightweights may prefer something else. Your should be able to provide a wealth of info.

My lbs guys ride every tyre they stock on HT's, FS XCO, and Marathon Trail bikes, so I value their opinion when making a new tyre selection. Sometimes they even have a used demo tyre for me to try out :)

Duane's hit it on the head.. You really asked for it here.

I Rode the Icon on the back and Ardent race in front for quite a while. Nice combo. Although check which casing you get on the ICON. The super light one cuts very easily and I'm 70kg.

If marathon racing was only about all out cornering you'd have seen the epic top ten ride DHR'r all day long.

But you will pay for the 3minutes it might save you on all the downhills combined whilst having to carry 4-600g of rotating mass the rest of the 3-4 hours.

I'm all for grippy tires on Enduro bikes but they roll much slower than the icon's or Racing Ralph the OP is talking about, seriously. I'm talking out of experience. It's like riding with the brakes on!

Indeed.

Which is why the OP should get a Magic Mary. I think if Vale fitted Magic Mary's to his Yamaha he'd be lapping Marquez

Went from 225 Racing Ralps front and rear, to 235 Ardent race(front) 235 Ikon(rear). Very comfortable (110KG) setup but does feel a bit if im riding with the brakes on.Mostly gravel roads over weekends. I think I will enjoy it more on the next race where there will be more singletrack etc.Bike is a Cannondale Scalpel. Might be looking at getting a light HT with skinny tires for those long gravel roads over weekends.(dare I say "gravel bike")

Mostly gravel roads, then I'd offer the Rekon Race as an option. Probably the only Maxxis tyre I really like. Rolls fast and has more grip than it's tread would suggest

Was thinking the 225-235 was a big jump -"rolling resistance"?

Very big reduction in rolling resistance from IKON or Ardent RACe to Rekon. On hardpack it just feels fast yet when you lean it over it grips.
