I am going to disagree with you both. I stop at stop streets and Red lights I do not SKIP a light at all and I have never been knocked over.

While on a strait road I have often been passed CLOSE by ignorant driver or driver who hate us.

Funny how people try and justify their actions.

So you think by stopping at all the stop streets and robots that will help you when a drunk drivers cuts across lanes or someone playing with their cell phone that takes you out?

Some sort of Karma thing?

In my mind "skip" means driving through, or behaving as if it is a yield sign .... maybe semantics, maybe trying to justify my actions ....

I STOP at stop streets and at red robots.   I only proceed when SAFE to do so.

I KNOW that at two intersections along my commute it borders on suicide to cycle into the intersection while the light is green !!  The way cars cut corners, combined with multi lane entrances, and since I need to turn right at these ....  I specifically stop at the pavement at these intersections even when it is green, and only proceed when safe to do so.

The rest of the intersections I treat the same as if I was in my car - stop, and only proceed when green.

So when I do "break the law", it is purely to ensure my safety.  Certainly not as some excuse to cut 2 seconds off my commute.

How many hours do you cycle per week?

Do you actually train or do you just commute?

What is your current PPA Seeding ?

Hey I commute 4 days a week, 14km each way, sometime more.

I have a MB PPA seeding

Sorry, but WHAT does this have to do with adhering to the rules of the road ?

How do you end up in front of him every time?

Imagine how *** slow he would be if he stopped everywhere  :whistling:

I overtook him after pulling away from GREEN traffic light. Maybe I wanted to show him that even if one does stop it does not slow you down that much :-)

No but it helps with the general cycling image and some drivers will respect us and give us a 1.2M we deserve. Others will have the excuse...."cyclist don't adhere to road rules so they don't belong on the road and I will not respect them with that 1.2m bull"

I think it’s about the perceived safety at an intersection, same as motorists at night when they do not feel safe at an intersection, proceed when it is safe to do so. Might be against the law but can save you from some nasty outcome

Plenty. As you perspective will change depending on where you at.

So when training at 4am for 2hours you expect me to stop at every red robot and unclip at every stop street

Now you compare that to someone cycling for 15min at 9am every morning.

Not really sure if that's what he is saying, more the fact that what they are doing is illegal. Regardless of whether taxis or other road users do it or not. We as a society will become better when we stop thinking the rules apply to everyone else but us.

It won't help in the specific unrelated instances you mentioned above, but it will definitely help with the PR of cycling in general. . .

1. I would stop as I have seen cars drive without lights that time of the morning.

2. I do train, but I pick a route where I don't have stop streets, you should try that

Strange, the rules don't state that they only apply during certain times of the day. . .

Not really a matter of perspective, more of right or wrong.

So you want to be treated with respect by other road users but they have to obey the road rules and you are above the law?

I don't understand his comment to imply what you are suggesting.

Safety or cyclists is not properly considered in the law. Remember the primary objective is to get home alive and than means remaining visible. Respect isn't earned by obeying the law when the other roads users don't obey the law either and therefore directly place your life in danger as a result. to a certain extent you have to think for them.

In all those holier than though cycling nations cyclists still move ahead of the motorised traffic to remain visible. The law covers them regardless.

If cyclists obey every single road law as it is written and understood in South Africa then we may as well roll over and play dead. Common sense is require here.

Running a red light is dangerous under certain circumstance but I seldom see a cyclist do so without regard for personal safety

You really think by stopping at every red robot and every stop street this will help?

80% chance the only people noticing this will be other cyclist looking at a opportunity to say something and wont be surprised if that "Cyclist Driver "takes out he's phone to take a video of how this guy is breaking the law.

Just to show what a horrible image he is setting

Ok lets all do what we want, and "mind our own business" and when I see an accident next time or some that is parked in a disabled bay, I just walk away and I will do the same when I see a breakin in progress.

Cause it does not help anyway

Ahh so because you use the road a lot you get to make up the rules.

That makes total sense...
