Maintaining fitness when traveling

I'm hoping somebody can help me with some advice on training

I travel extensively for work, throughout Africa mostly. Usually 4 weeks in country and then back to SA for a few weeks.

Depending on where I am staying I sometimes don't have access to a gym with a stationary bike or one that is ridable.

Usually there is a treadmill though.

My issue is I am just back on the bike after a 3 year break and trying to build some base mileage.

If I can't ride, will treadmill sessions still help with building some form of base even if it's it's not a cycling base?

Will I loose all my cycling fitness I have gained while in SA if all I can do is run when away?

Thanks for any help and suggestions

I know a couple of the gents that travel with us for projects pack their running shoes .... maybe not ideal, but at least you stay fit and active...... you can see the guys that dont do anything .....

Are you staying in the same city all the time? If so try to work a relationship with a guest house. I'm always in the same place (dedicated room on a remote site, so different story) but I know that if I had to ask the guest house that I frequent to keep a bike (and possibly trainer) for me they would. If it's different locations, running shoes unfortunately. I find it extremely difficult that way though.

i started running in December 2017, and I found that it had a negative effect on my cycling (in the first few months). However, as I got used to running, I've found that I can go for 2 weeks without touching my bike and I am still able to ride at the same intensity as before that.

I can't comment on anything longer than 2 weeks, as I've yet to try running only for longer than 2 weeks. You won't lose fitness, but you might lose power.

I work mainly in Holland so I bought a cheapish road bike which I leave in a bike bag at the hotel when I go home. The bike is getting more miles than my bikes in SA! If I end up elsewhere I have a pair of running shoes for treadmill or stationary bike.

I've found that treadmill will keep you fit but it's a different fit to cycling ...if you know what I mean. Stationary bikes are best if available.

Get a skipping rope. Keeps the cardio exercised and easy to transport. Apparently a 15 min skip is the same as a 30 min run.

That's a great idea.
