Specialized / KTM.

I think your main supposition is wrong. KTM is not superior and does not have superior accessories. They are a premium brand that gives the market what they want, an e-start two stroke, hence their amazing market share. Specialized is also a premium brand, but spec wise, they charge more for a lesser specced bike than say Merida or Giant

As KTM comes from the factory it has always had better suspension and brakes.

I agree with your Specialized comments.

No trolling involved here..

But from some of the answers people are buying the brand before any real tangible benefits.

My reference to KTM is because they charge more because of their strong brand, but also have tangible superior accessories on the bike.

Ah right. Well, they make good-looking accessible bikes and have a big market share. So (especially to people who are new to cycling) I suspect the logic is "Well they are popular so they are a safe bet for my first serious bike". And I would say that they are a safe bet. But the only sensible way to say one bike is "better" than another is to see how much you get for your money. Specialized are fine in this department, but definitely not the best.

This is where branding comes in.

Creating and publishing a brand tends to create the perception of quality among buyers. When they perceive this, they will pay more for the items. So, the reason for this is that consumers believe that branded products are of higher quality and therefore are worth a higher price.

Specialized products are well branded and marketed not saying they are any better than a Giant, Trek, Scott etc...

IMHO People are creatures of habit when buying branded items.

I think it also has to do with the experience of buying at Specialized stores. It is by far the best service I have recieved from a bike shop in terms of friendliness and willingness to help and they know what is available and what not. Their stores also look very premium and they make every customer feel welcome and important.

nope, you are now showing your lack of knowledge, best upgrade to a ktm xcw is closed cartridge front end. The 2t e start is one of the main selling factors. But the suspension and brakes are not superior. The hydraulic clutch definitely but not brakes

8 of the top ten in Paris Roubaix were on Spez bikes. Enough Said.

LOL... and because it's all about the bike and not the legs that drive it... Spez marketers must love you

Its more a personal taste and liking

If I had to choose between the 2, I will go for a Spez, for the simple reason that Spez has a very good back up in SA and what I heard from riders on Spez is that if something happens the warranties are good. I'm also on an Epic and do like my mtb, think there are better or more that I like but never had any problems.

Some new KTM's actually look amazing and very well spec on the mtb side. Road bike i'm on a Cervelo so can't comment actually

Remember those 7 years when the only bike on your wish list was Trek.? :)

Most people are drawn to what they see under the pros and what they see winning races.

That was me 7 years back, when i pulled the trigger on my 1st 29er and bought a 2012 TREK Superfly 100. Have put many km's on it since then. 6 weeks back I had an awkward moment on the trails at Modders and cracked the seat tube. Put in a claim against their lifetime warranty, they replaced it within 10 days with a 2019 TOP FUEL 9.9 frame and rear shock, no questions asked.

So for me TREK will always be my 1st choice.......well at least for MTB......road will be COLNAGO & only COLNAGO.
