I'm in the market for a dual suspension mtb, I have my eyes on a specialized enduro 650b comp, but do i really need all that travel?? I am really keen to start enduro racing and riding a bit more technical and rough, is this the bike for me or should I go with something more short travel??

So many answers, but in short, it boils down to you. Plenty trails around can be shredded with a short travel bike. A 140mm rig is a bit of both worlds. An enduro rig gives you that extra plushness especially when things get rowdy.  The enduro is an awesome bike. See what you can get to test ride. Enduro, trail, 650b, 29er and take it from there.

plenty  guys ride long travel bikes in south africa despite the general consensus that its overkill

It all depends on what your main focus is going to be. If you want to gun it down the Enduro is a good option. I would go for the 29er/6fatty Enduro same price but more options.

But if you are looking to enter Enduro events and just shred trails I would go for something around the 130 - 140mm travel. That will be lekker playful plus climbing might be a little less painful.

depends where you live and what riding you are going to do. if you are in Gauteng, a 120mm xc bike with slack geometry will work plenty nice. if however you are in the ridding meccha of western cape you could invest in a carbon 140mm travel bike. my 2c

I would suggest a bike with 130 - 140mm travel rear and 150mm upfront..

I’m running something like this at the moment and I have done a few KZN enduro’s and still do a 50km trail ride every weekend with ease..

Suspension and Geometry has improved so much lately that you can setup your bike to handle anything you want to ride.

Testing a few different bikes is definitely the best way to figure out what you like and what you are comfortable on..

The end.
