Powerbar magnesium shot works really well you just need to be sure to take it before the cramp sets in.

Any advice on how to curb cramps on a race like this? Doing it for the first time and I sometimes get cramps on 55km MTB races

USN Cramp Block.

Magnesium tablets work as well. Slow-Mag or the Clicks brand magnesium tabs. Although the more time you spend on the saddle, the less cramps you'll get.

Thank heavens for that. Need all the help I can get.  :whistling:

To cycle into the teeth of an Easterly wind (as early predictions had) on the embanked highway section, was not something I was looking forward to.

Getting excited now. In 48 hours time we'll be in Durban.

Relax Thursday, Expo on Friday (maybe a short bicycle ride to somewhere and back), Leg loosener with some of the locals on Saturday, more relaxing and then it's game on on Sunday.

On the menu for Sunday after the race is a decent Bunny Chow. Where to go for that?

Wife never had a properse Durban chow before, so I need a proper chow, not something that will scar her for life.

I'm stressing for Sunday, to be honest. Not for the 160km, but for my wife doing the 35km.

It will be her biggest and longest event so far, and also the most difficult route. She's ridden it a number of times on Rouvy, at least.

We drive down on Friday only, then Sat we'll go to the expo, and drive the 35km route.

It will relax her nerves to have driven it beforehand and ridden it on rouvy, good move.

Seriously jealous of all of you riding this awesome event. I'll do my best to be back next year! Enjoy!

the 35km route is easy, just a few bumps to deal with. really just more a fun ride.

Her longest previous event was 21km... in Bloem... so pretty much flat ;)

But I'm not so worried about the distance, or even the bumps, actually - she's ridden the full route on Rouvy 10 times, and also some time on Zwift.

She's not terribly fond of downhills, which for a race that starts inland and finishes at sea level is a bigger problem :D As long as she doesn't go and overthink things and has a panic attack, she'll be fine.

Canecutters in Glenwood or Umhlanga

The road surface is really bad. I suppose the event organisation will fill the odd big pothole, but its going to be rough going, especially on the Dards parts of the race.

without creating too much panic, I think the only "really" bad section is the 12km stretch between Thornville and Umlaas Road, this surface is rough. and then a small patch in Cato Ridge under the bridge.

The rest is okay, just chose your line and stay mostly in the middle of the road

wow HdB i had exactly the same problem.....fitness wasnt the issue. Nerves on DH was....tested my patience as she would grip on those brakes as if her life depended on it  :cursing:

Resolved this by signing her up for more smallish races and dropping back to ride with her. She's more comfortable now to ride alone and the confidence is growing.

good idea doing the recon the day before. Seeing it herself will alleviate some of the fears.

just pray that she doesn't fall (even the slightest fall will undo alles!)

good luck to you both!
