Spez Camber vs new Spez Stumpjumper ST

I beg to differ I ride the Stumpy ST and it is fundamentally different to the Camber just on travel alone 130 vs 120. My wife has the Epic Evo and that rides like a Camber at 120mm travel. Bear in mind that the Stumpy St travel can be upgraded to 140mm if needed which puts it closer to the enduro level.

In what other ways is it fundamentally different?

The Epic EVO has 100mm rear (with BRAIN) vs 120mm of Camber and 120mm of Stumpy ST? So which is fundamentally more different?

Epic Evo has 120mm fork, Camber 120 and ST 130mm.

Before we start talking Geo or travel numbers, the Epic is now a Single Pivot where the Stumpy is still running as a FSR, so that in itself will have a different ride and handling feel or characteristic.

The brain will also not be a fluid as a std shock.

Does that classify as "fundamentally different"??   :whistling:

Yeah, in that the Epic Evo is fundamentally different to the camber.

Stumpy ST is the "New Camber"

120mm rear (camber) vs 120mm rear (ST)

Same suspension design (Horst Link)

130mm fork (which the camber was often upgraded to)

Epic Evo isn't

100mm rear (evo) vs 120mm (ST)

Single Pivot vs Horst Link

120mm fork vs 120/130/140mm fork (depending on spec and user upgrades)

Fundamentals aside, the epic evo is one of the best bikes I’ve ridden. Unless you live in the alps, it’s the bike for 99% of SA trails. For context, I ride a 140/130 trail bike. The evo punches well above it’s weight

I cannot agree with you, here. An epic evo is still an XC race bike. It just has a 120mm fork on it. It's not the bike that Joe Average should be considering. The Stumpy ST, though, is one of them that Joe Average should consider. Along with the new Trance 29, a Following, the SB130, etc etc.

and my personal new favourite the Silverback Stratos AL ... just maybe bump the fork up to 130 or 140mm at a later stage.

Most trail bikes in SA are used for xc type riding. Stumpy ST is a great bike, I spent lots of time on one. But the evo doesn’t ride like a xc bike at all. It’s pretty darn quick on the downs and decimates the ST on the flats and climbs. It’s very forgiving considering the geo.

Well just take each one for a ride the Evo rides more like a Camber and my new Stumpy rides like my old Stumpy did and the Geo will bear this out.

I was just posting this comment, evo rides just like a camber.

Add to this the fact that Spez will tell you that the Evo is their replacement for the Camber and they have shifted the Stumpy closer to being an enduro bike. But as with all things the actual feel on the ride tells all.

Yes and No.

Epic Evo HTA is 68,5% - that's new gen geometry XC but TRAIL a generation or two ago.

The "average joe" in SA wants to ride Sani, W2W - in fact, XCM is considered a "fun ride" in SA.

Again, it depends what you want to ride and what you actually ride.  "Trail" in the WC and the Gauteng are completely different things.

Your recommendations for trail bikes are spot-on, though...I'd happily ride them all but the question is, where in the Gauteng?

I swung a leg over the ST and took it for a parking lot and step drop test at the LBS this morning .... let me just say this is now high on my short list of what bike to buy soon.

The Alum Comp ST with the x-fusion bothers me a bit as in my mind it just "feels" like a serious compromise in suspension quality, but I could be completely mistaken on this and will never know till I can get a decent trail ride or two in on it.

The Carbon Comp looks like the golden ticket .... but that ticket is make from gold when looking at the price tag unfortunately.

SO WHAT THE SPAZ HAVE SPECIALIZED DONE NOW

  1. from July 2018 all frames have a real lifetime warranty
  2. if you sell your bike to someone, and you give them your proof of purchase, they will carry over what would remain of a two year warranty from date of purchase
  3. for two years after purchase, S will FREE OF CHARGE service your shock every 150hrs of riding or at least once a year if your mileage is low
  4. they have a rather decent crash replacement discount on all S branded products that carries for a fair number of years

The big S has got my attention and serious interest.

I have the 2019 Stumpjumper LT comp. I upgraded the fork to a 36 and swapped the wheels to a CWC Flox on Hope wheelset. Rest is stock. Great bike with great local support and Spaz sponsors my backdoor trail network. Be warned the alu frames are quite heavy. My XL is close to 16kg LOL. Coincidentally also my best pedalling bike I have had (in its class).
