Hi.

Welcome to the Hub.

Any new bike at R10k will tick the right boxes when starting out.

Keep in mind that a proper helmet and riding shorts are also very important.

Steer clear of the big department stores (Sportsmans Warehouse, Makro and Game). Their staff generally are not to clued up on cycling.

Any proper bike shop will be able to help you

I would recommend a previously owned bike as mountain biking is an expensive sport and if its not for you selling your bike will result in a smaller loss. First you need to decide on a hard tail (only front shock) or (dual suspension) front and back. With your budget you will probably only get a hard tail which is not an issue. I would recommend looking at a sliverback, giant or titan in that price range. Bets is to head to your local cycling shop and get advice there and avoid the department stores as mentioned above. Which are are you located in?

Welcome.

Like said above, Does the 10k include helmet, kit, shoes etc? Definitely something to think about.

I personally would go 2nd hand as a starter and probably hard tail.

Where are you based?

What sort of riding do you want to do?

Maybe once you have a few of the above questions answered we can point you in the direction of a few good deals in the classifieds here.

AND what ever you do, don't buy a bike without viewing it before. Don't part with money before seeing a bike.

Welcome to the Hub.

And welcome to the world of MTB's.

JacBrand is spot on with is feedback.  Only thing I can add to that - make SURE to buy the correct size bike !!!  A slightly smaller bike feels more comfortable in the beginning, and then quickly becomes a pain ...

Second hand has it merits .... IF you have somebody that can help you check out a second hand bike !  If you buy a lemon it can quickly turn expensive to fix.

Thus I would look at something like this - https://bike-addict.co.za/collections/titan-29er/products/titan-rogue-cruz-2020

Titan has a number of bikes in this price range .... a good salesman will quickly explain why you "need" to spend three times the money ..... starting out, and casual rides these bikes will give you miles of smiles.  If the bug bites, you will upgrade the R9k bike just like you will upgrade the R20k bike, except you will take less of loss on the R9k bike when upgrading.

IF the costs are very similar :

- take the one with an "air-shock"

- take the one with hydraulic brakes rather than mechanical brakes ... but this is a slippery slope ...  :whistling:

One more thing to consider .... when buying the bike most shops will add a "tubeless conversion" to conclude the deal.  DO ask for this

Thank you all for the great advice... Im surely going to look at the titan range and the silverback range. Im excited to go.... Just on my height i belive im in the middle med and a large 176 cm... Med or Large whats the call ????

Length ....

I am also 1,76m, but long femers and short torso .... On some brands the Med is too small, and I cant get the saddle far enough back.

My current bike is a Medium size Giant Trance, and fits me like a glove.

Point being that manufacturers dont have the exact same dimensions for "M" or "L".  Your only way to be sure is to go to a bike shop that can do a proper bikefit for you.  Saddle height is the obvious bit, then they check the saddle position to ensure the correct position of your knee vs the pedals during cycling - this is where my long femers cause havoc for me ....

Not too worry, any decent bikeshop can assist you with this in a matter of minutes.

I bought this a couple of years back...serves me well and I upgraded what I needed as I went along and finances permitted...

I would avoid second hand unless you know what you are doing or you have a knowledgeable mate with you...will be too easy to get a lemon and become put off...

nice bike !  Shock and brakes certainly good for the price bracket !!

I would save up some more for the Silverback sola 2(not eagle). Very good bike and you would not have to upgrade something soon or wait till end of the year for Momsen specials

It depends on what kind of riding you want to do. If it is simple trails and beach front rides then a 10k bike will definitely do the trick I started out with a Giant Talon 3 and it did the job.... for a while....

... but if you are looking to do more technical trails or longer distances I would sincerely consider getting a good dual suspension with decent component, even a good pre owned.

Fact: You will love mountain biking

Fact: You will want to upgrade to a good bike

Speaking from experience :-)

I found a Silverback Sola 1 recently second hand on this site for 10k for my girlfriend. Light, comfortable and a decent groupset.  There a few similar hardtails: 29er, Alu frame, reasonable fork and Shimano Xt/SLX that come through around that price and are barely ridden.
