MphatiPyga Posted September 21, 2020 Share I’m sure you could mount a Thule style roof rack mount on that as well, just need some cross beams to mimic the roof rack RudoJ and Ed-Zulu

Few items to consider: 1 strap down the wheel in track vs bolting down the fork ... ( amd where to store the wheel then) 2 now how to stop the bikes swaying ..... a fold up arm with some rubber strap works well, think I got this from Holdfast as well. 3 ... locking the bikes .... weave a cable through the frames and rims, lock to the trailer Vetplant and RudoJ

warrenpfo Posted September 28, 2020 Share I have an alustar ranger trailer with 3 bikes ontop. 2 are in pro rides the 3rd a kids bike in a free ride all mounted to thule roof bars. I say all this as this past weekend I found doing some gravel travel that all the bikes rocked really badly when traveling slowly on the dirt road. I assume its because the aluminum roofracks are flexing and that why so just make sure they fitted securely.
Dogs Posted September 28, 2020 Share Have a look at these - they have fold-up arm to stop bikes from swaying, https://www.strides.co.za/
Captain Fastbastard Mayhem Posted September 28, 2020 Share Flip it and tie it down. 3 points. Each end of the bars and then on the saddle. Done. BigDL and i24
warrenpfo Posted September 28, 2020 Share By flip it do you mean mount the bikes across the trailer and not front to back? That might work
Captain Fastbastard Mayhem Posted September 28, 2020 Share By flip it do you mean mount the bikes across the trailer and not front to back? That might workno, as in upside down. Wrap the grips in a cloth, and tie them down. Then do the same for the saddle. No need for a rack, you can still pack additional stuff on the trailer, and it's fast. You can even use those yellow re-usable zip ties, or a couple of tie down straps. It won't go anywhere.
CJ Van Posted September 28, 2020 Share By flip it do you mean mount the bikes across the trailer and not front to back? That might workNo, he means flip it upside down. Then you have 3 points of contact, 2 on the handlebars and 1 on the seat. I transport our MTB's like this on our big camping trailer. I put a piece of foam under the handle bars and under the seat. Then I strap the front down by compressing the fork a bit and tie it down to the sides of the rails on top. Do the same with the back of the bike and those bikes are going nowhere. No side to side movement at all. Make sure you also tie the wheels off so that they cannot spin freely. This will be your cheapest option but it takes a bit longer to put the bikes on. If you know how to tie a knot that holds you should be fine. If you don't have to much trust in your knots then do some research on YouTube or go this the Holdfast options. Coming back from a Northern Cape trip we were traveling Between Nieuwoudtville and Vanrhynsdorp. With my bike on the Thuli roof rack I was idling along at about 115km/h. A gent came past in his large vehicle, towing a "venter" trailer. On top of the trailer was a mattress, and his MTB strapped securely onto the trailer. This thing was as safe as can be .... , and being on the mattress it was not moving about and protected from scratches ..... As he came past us I noticed the leading edge of the mattress lifting .... lifting .... LIFTING .... standing right up .... by now he was doing a decent speed as he pulling ahead of me, and back into the lane ..... Next moment the "mattress" went FLYING .... with the bike on it .... it flipped once or twice, and then slid along the tar .... I stopped and was at his bike long before they managed to stop and run back. He was LUCKY !!! Saddle MO3R toe !! Bar end and grips needed replacement. And that was it. Not a single scratch on the bike. strapping down a bike CAN be done safely .... but man-o-man, the image of that bike flying along on the mattress will stay etched in my mind ..... things go pear shaped QUICKLY. PS - then again, using a Thule rack without due care, and being in a rush can also end badly .....
