I'd never ever take my bike to CL for any service related work to be done but now and then I have found clothing and sometimes a bearing or other unobtainable-elsewhere part....

Yeah, sometimes stores just have ridiculous pricing (for whatever reason) that others just can't compete with.

Admitting that isn't necessarily poor service ...

 

He was totally uninterested, and it would not have been selling down in hand stock to me - I gave him my budget, and they did not have stock in hand, but he could have got stock. The Spark was actually a bike I was interested in, and although slightly more expensive than what I could get the stumpy for, it was within my budget, and better specced. 

 

But ja, maybe he was just being honest.......

How some bike shops stay in business I really cant fathom.

 

last year when I was in the marker for a trail bike - looking to spend between R35 and R45k, I walked into one of pretorias oldest shops (granted, they have changed hands and moved location a few time). The shop was empty, but they has pretty decent selection of bikes on the floor (mostly XC bikes though). Although they were empty, the salesman didnt find it nescesarry to engage with me. I eventually walked up to him, and said, verbatim, "Im looking for trail bike and willing to spend up to R45k, Specialised is running a massive sale down the road, why shouldnt I just go there and buy one of the new Stumpjumpers for R35k".

 

The answer I got blew my freaking mind - the muppet says to me, You should probably just go an do that, thats a really good deal - So I went and did exactly that - even though if he actually tried, he would pretty easily been able to sell me a Scott Spark 950 - seeing as they were/are scott agents....

I’ve had exactly the same from one of the many shops in Lynnwood Rd.

 

Was looking at getting a Trek, went in to the shop to see what stock they have and what I would needing to spend. Every employee watched me walk around and look at what they had on the floor, not a soul even came over to greet let alone discuss bikes with me. I assume it’s because I’m not your usual petite cyclist build

 

Left thinking they having a bad day, had to wait a few days for bonus money to clear any way. Would go back when cash was ready.

 

Second attempt, I walked in, guy walked out and looked at me and said something along the lines of “don’t even both”

 

Same thing, nobody bothered to come over, so I approached one of them. Explain to him what I’m looking for, can they get stock etc. You would swear I was asking to sleep with his sister!

 

Walked out mid conversation, drove to the then Trailwolf, told them what I’m looking for etc, they gave me a demo then and there to ride. Came back from the ride and and did the payment for a top end Pyga.

 

This was 2 years ago and since then I’ve spent many of monies at the other shops in the area (3 other brand new bikes)

 

I wouldn’t even go back to the original shop for a valve cap!

Post like this make me want to open a bike shop. The current market requires customer and quality service. From my experience, there's a huge lack of both #manifestating

 

Went to a shop the other day for brake cables for a road bike I was working on, only to get home and see they gave me mountain bike cables. Luckily I had spare cables, will exchange it next time I'm there.

CL may not be perfect, granted, but Dean has always been super helpful, and never ever called me their “bru”.

Hold up.. I use the same cable for both. Am I doing something wrong?

 

I don't know, but the metal ball end is the type that hooks under the brake lever (round) and the road brake cable I'm familiar with is the more half rounded/ half egg look type. I never tried to use it as it's not the right tool for the job.

Guys most of use here try support your LBS as much as you can.

Naught. I don’t back the model of supporting an LBS for its own sake, as my financial priority is my own bike and getting quality service. I do, however, back quality mechanics regardless of where they work and someone who loves your bike almost as much as you do is worth driving out to, even if it’s a little further than convenient.

 

Take your bike where it’s looked after.
