Cassette alignment issue? - granny gear slipping

Recommended Posts

Howdy

I decided to take the plunge and do my first rear hub / freehub full service, bearings and alles (industry 9 hub)

But when i put everything back on the bike and went for a ride i noticed the granny gear kept wanting to drop down

So adjusted indexing on the trail and didnt really help

Back home i checked hangar, redid the limit screws, and indexed to the point where it stays on the lowest gear mostly, but didnt compromise the highest gear

It almost looks like the cassette is too close to the wheel and thats throwing the alignment off, is that possible?

if it was too far away from the wheel i would think i fitted something wrong but too close sounds weird, unless there is a spacer thats to go at the end of the cassette or the lock ring is too right?

I didn't use a bearing press but they looked pretty flush on the hub

Drive train is a Sram 1x12 Eagle with an XO derailleur

Any help would be greatly appreciated because im an unfit sack of **** and granny gear is my only friend

Gratitude

NX? Shimano hg freebody? Did it perhaps have a spacer that goes in before the cassette like the hope hubs that you you forgot to put back in?

Ah yes sorry, its NX with shimano freehub body

Thats what i thought it might be but i was pretty careful with all the cogs, but i didnt see an extra spacer, is it possible to fit it on the wrong side? surely it wouldn't fit there?

Not sure sbout your hubs but the hopes come with this spacer 1.8mm ish you use for mtb cassettes. It can stick to the back of the cassette if you take it off and can fall off once you start cleaning. But that is for those, like i said..i dont know about yours. Was just sharing my thoughts

Ok, so lets trouble shoot real quick:

  • I assume the granny was not slipping prior to disassembly
  • How many km's does the cassette and chain have on it? If you say and I quote: im an unfit sack of **** and granny gear is my only friend.  Then this leads me to ask how often do you use the granny - percentage wise from the total?
  • How close does the cassette sit from the spokes? If it came off without a spacer then theoretically this should not be an issue but one never know, does the cassette spin freely on the hub once the lock ring has been tightened or does it have play? I have seen a 10 speed cassette fit on some hubs (26er wheels) and then not fit on other hubs (29er wheels). As Morne mentioned, that 1.6mm spacer is quite important.

My conclusion based on the above mentioned questions:

I am assuming that you've done a few km's and of those you've been using the granny often. Therefore the chain and or cassette may have some excessive stretch / wear and now that everything has been cleaned / serviced Murphy got involved to show you that you need to replace some parts  :whistling:

If there's not excessive wear on the chain / cassette then my solutions would be one of the following:

  •  Buy a new bike, this one is finished
  • You did not play with the crank / BB by any chance? There's a spacer on there as well and sometimes if you put the spacer on the wrong side it then scratches and jumps quite a bit when it's in the granny. This is because of the spacer pushing the crank arm too far out and messing up the alignment.
  • So you have done the setting of the limit screws correctly? (I assume that you can throw around a spanner and that you're not just a tool ). Sometimes the cable and or limit screws can be "just off" creating a matter of issues - how old is your cable? Whenever I struggle with gears and not being able to get it sorted I literally just replace the cable and it sorts everything out.

Sorry about the essay

just did some reading up and the i9 hubs dont need use a spacer :( i wonder what it could be!

Indexing and limit screws have very different jobs.

If you get the top (granny) right but the bottom is not by adjusting the index adjuster on the shifter then the hanger is bent.

best is to undo the cable. Then while turning the crank move the RD from smallest to biggest and make sure the limits are correct.

Chain does not drop.

Now chain to smallest and shifter in same place but pressing small paddle it is.

Barrel adjuster all the way in. Then 4-5 clicks out.

Pull cable tight using you fingers and lock with screw.

Shift one up and if chain does not go up adjust barrel.

Next one up adjust barrel until shifting is lekka

yoyo!

Sorry somehow the reply notifications slipped by me

To answer your questions:

Granny and all the gears were shifting immaculately before hub service

I reckon that cassette has 2000km on it? Got a new chain beginning of year but didnt ride as much

The cassette sits tightly on with the lock-ring on, no play, there's a reasonable gap between spokes, can fit a finger between it

Buy a new bike! thats exactly what i was thinking, Wreckoning V2 should solve all the shifting issues haha

I was going to service the hub and BB but haven't yet

Limit screws etc were all done, i know 12spd eagle needs a special B tension tool which im going to borrow

UPDATE:

i bought a chain checker and this chain is vrot bananas haha, was in-between 0.75 and 1.0!

So i bought a new chain, and also a new inner and outer housing cable as well, im pretty sure those should work, hoping the cassette is fine also

Thanks again for the advice and always appreciate a good essay!

Sorry for late reply, i kinda follow that process on initial setup of the derailleur but i just bought a new chain and inner / outer cable so when setting up ill do just that!
