I watched the clip on youtube last night and I can't see how Sauser was demoted. It sucks. Looked like Sauser had the line and only moved in one direction. Paulissen rode into the back of him. Sauser should have won.

i so agree, if you in da front den you have right of way so paulissen should of moved out the way to stay out of trouble and not taken a chance and stuff up a whole finnish

Sauser started sprint in the middle of the road with Paulissens front wheel already next to his back wheel and then they end up with not enough room to pass???

Sauser moves in quite hard and a bit further finishes its of with a smaller move.

Thoes this happen a lot? yes

Do some get away with it? yes

is it illegal?? definitely

the thing is that something similar happened in todays stage of the tour robbie hunter got flicked by thor hushovd simple thing is that robbie didnt complain because it is part of cycling it might be illegal to flick omeone but the rule remains if you are in front you have choice of path so i think sauser should have won because of simple trail etiquette

turtlek, Hushovd didn't flick Hunter. There's drifting and there's flicking. Hushovd and others drifted across Hunter's line which is Hunter's bad luck as it messed up his momentum.

Serendipity, what key words did you use to search on Youtube for the Sauser/Paulissen clip?

Have not been able to see the clip, but saw a picture in the local paper this morning.

What a boring looking finish, looked more like a road race stage finish without the bunch.

Surely Sauser was in 'the wrong' - I haven't seen any clips or pictures, just my slightly BIASED opinion Wink as a fellow countrymen won Clap

As Sauser said - how can one race official make such an important decision - he would like a panel of at least 5 judges!

Mini-hijack...

Did anyone read that the Russians (Tinkoff + poetin and Ibrahimovich) are throwing HUGE money at cycling - they signed Gert Steegmans (offered x3 his Quickstep contract), Redandt (Silence-Lotto team manager) and would like to get Pozatto and McEwen...

If you play the clip slowly you can see that Paulissen shoulder dipped first and took our Sauser. Here is the link...

Having seen the clip, i have to say i think Sauser has been hard done by.  I am not saying that Paulissen was not faster than Sauser but it was not Sauser fault that they fell. That is my take on it.

ja, just looked like an accident, 2 very tired riders going for it........

remember when Cadel Evans was taken out by the italian guy (Marco Bui I think) at U23 world champs years back, wasn't at the finish line but near enough......oh well Bui may have got the rainbow that year - where's he now?

here's a quote:

But there is no trace of bitterness for these cruel twists of fate, just quiet determination. He would not make any comments about the Italian rider Marco Bui, who brushed shoulders with Evans in the final kilometres of last world's. Although Evans crashed immediately after, he would only "I guess there's two ways you can get around someone in front of you", but was unwilling to elaborate.

"I always try to be diplomatic," he added.

They just didn't want Sauser (and Specialized of course Big%20smile) to be both 2008 XC and marathon world champion, flippin chops Angry

Thats what happens when you just read the results.  I didn't even know anything had happened.  Will catch the clip at home when I have a real internet connection.

Just watched the clip and reckon Sauser was robbed by the officials. Sorry, official. He was ahead and never moved off his line. In fact, where the barriers narrow, he even edged over (away from Paulissen) slightly. Paulissen made body contact first and Sauser simply leaned slightly into Paulissen (as you do when there's body contact on a bicycle) to counterbalance. Dramatic finish! Just a pity the gold didn't get awarded to the actual winner.
