I'm looking at building up a 2019 Cannondale supersix 52cm (non hi-mod) with Campy SR. At the moment I will have to do with ordinary aluminium wheels due to the budget (aprox. 1500g). All the other components will be carbon

Do you guys think this build will come in under 7kg or above?

Also is there a major difference between the hi-mod and non hi-mod frames when it comes to weight and stiffness?

There's a weight and stiffness penalty as the hi-mod version is lighter and stiffer (pure race machine). Alu hoops will take you over 7 kgs, most likely. 30-40mm carbon hoops will get the build close to sub 7 or under, depending on other components.

i'd step down to record and use the money saved for lighter wheels

The HiMod is marginally stiffer than the Ballistec frame. You'd need to generate around 1200W to feel the difference so basically if you're a sprinter it might be a little more flexible by a 1mm or two. Weight difference is around 150gr between Hi-Mod and Ballistec.

Personally I would go further and say unless you are set on Campy, go for ultegra 6800. It’s lighter than ultegra 8000 rim brake. Spares are much cheaper, a set of campy cables (in my experience they make the shifting much better) is almost R1000!  Find a cannondale si crank to save a few more grams and because they look hawt. Brakes and saddle are an easy spot to save weight too, but not at the expense of comfort and safety. Then some aero carbon hoops and sell your light alloy ones - Darkhorses occasionally pop up for quite a fair price on the hub.

I hear you man but one never steers a man away from Campy. That's just SAVAGE.

Campy cables, last time I priced them they were almost R3000 for both brake and gears.

Campy Chains.....x2 the price of an equivalent Wipperman Connex and you need a special chain-breaker that supports the fragile link pin....

campy Cassettes, ya no well, better make sure you have a rental property to mortgage when replacement time comes

BUT these issues can be overcome by Jagwire and Wipperman.

The gear ratios on the Campy cassettes are nice, really nice.

It just looks CLASS....until you scratch it then jarred at BMC better be on short dial

And lastly, ITS NOT SHIMANO......everybody has Shimano

Not if he puts a set of Neutrons or Nucleons on it. Those will be lighter than the carbon ones you suggest.

PS, I have Neutrons (aluminium) on my Campag super record bike, and it's lighter than 7kgs.

I have it on good authority you can run 11 speed campy shifting with a Shimano or SRAM drivetrain.

Hey Mikaeel, good luck with your build. I had a 2018 Supersix with Super record it came in at about 7.3 with 1500g wheels on, 300g power pedals but heavy stock saddle.

What are you riding now ? I would never have thought that bike of yours was so light !

I have built a Canyon Ultimate with some weightweenie brakes and DA di2 as a KOM hunting machine... I just need to find the right wheels and I will have a weight but I am hoping for around 6.5 kg.

It was lighter when it had the campy on, but the Ultegra turned it from a racehorse into more of a workhorse.
