Bicycle respray , perhap a good oppurtunity?

Hi everybody, 

As a matter of interest, My main line of business is automotiv refurbishment and car restoration, I have many years experience in spraypainting and the experience in understanding prep, specific primers and their uses, base coats, 2k , metallic, fine lining, etc, I have a desire to offer potential clients with quality professional bicycle refurbs/respray, the environment will be in a clean negative pressured spray room-(sucking all dirt and overspray out the booth etc).

Types of respray work would be from prep of frame, either carbon or steel, using the correct primer , offering a variety of finishes, and ultimately restoring the biccycle back to original or alternatively work with clients t create a custom spray-job excludng airbrushing-I m not an airbrush artist thats forsure,logos can be either sprayed using a stencil or water transfers for those who would prefer this.

 

I am not sure who offers the service in JHB and am looking to get any suggestions?

Carbon bike repair is probably the best in jhb , there are 100's of people claiming to do 'resprays' but exceptionally few do it well

Go for it. If you can earn extra R doing it and your price is reasonable there might be an opportunity. Also depends exactly where you're locatedin JHB. Cycledelic do amazing work. I wouldn't spend a Buck at CBR if my life depended on it. I'm going to refurb my carbon MTB but will do it myself as I've sprayed the odd racing car etc & that adds to the enjoyment . Good luck!

From a practical point, you'll need to be very good at masking and/or have a few tapping and facing tools for frame prep post repray. Overspray in threads, on faced surfaces and in pressfit interfaces will cause untold grief when reassembling.

After our project we just could not re-fit the threaded BB .... could not see anything with the eye.

 

Local bike shop just smiled and re-tapped the thread.

 

 

And this may be another thing to consider for the OP .... the local bike paint specialists offer two prices, one when you bring the stripped down frame, another when they are expected to strip and re-build the frame.
