Should I buy frame from overseas?

I have been looking at Carbon Frames locally and it seems that due to inflation/interest rates/exchange rates etc one cannot buy a decent frame for under R20K. As such I have noticed that I can buy a Specialized Tarmac Expert Frame (2007 model) for $1400 (around R11K).  Not sure about shipping yet but I have asked them. Should I consider this? I know the argument about warranty etc will come up, but geez I can save a lot of money.

Just be careful to add the cost of shipping and VAT before evaluating if its worthwhile. Shipping on a frame will be quite a lot more expensive than on smaller items.

I got a shipping quote of ?200 on a ?300 frame!

Blew my potential deal out of the water. Might as well fly over to collect.

Would customs duty be payable on a frame?

For sure!

Can work out a great deal if you take the whole frame though :-)

I have also looked at shipping a frame from Comobike 'but it would have ended up more expensive than at my lbs.

Also really if I buy a cervelo frame from somewhere overseas will cervelo honour the guarantee? I don't think so.

no they probably won't! But I simply entertained the idea with the slight possibility that shipping might not be that much. The bike is being sold by R&A Cycles in the US. I guess I will will keep on looking...

Add about 30% for shipping and taxes to that and then see if its still worth it.

the big problem is the shipping.  no tax on a single frame with no accessories if you bring it into SA.

You won't be able to do that (I know I have tried with a ladies saddle and shoes recently), because Specialized have SA distrubutors / license you cannot buy from any other country except good old SA....
