With winter approaching and the numerous muggings of solo riders in the city of gold I have decided to get a smart trainer.  I am not a complete novice when it comes to the concept of indoor training, so my questions are quite specific.

Tacx: R10 000 vs Think Rider: R8 000

  • The Tacx has a better grade simulation 10% to the 5% of the Think rider. How significant is this difference in the overall training experience of indoor training?
  • The Think Rider does not have ERG mode and the tacx does. So is erg mode an absolute must-have, or can one do without it and not compromise the training experience?
  • How advisable is buying a used smart trainer? I am aware of the obvious warranty issue and the potential of buying a unit with undisclosed defects.
  • What reasonable measures can one take to ensure that a used smart trainer has no issues?

ERG is what enables structured interval training and would be a deal breaker not having it for me.

I am bias on the used vs new debate. In 2017 I bought a used Gen 1 kickr. It has been used and abused by myself and the wife ever since then and really been relatively fuss free. But disclaimer is that I may have gotten lucky.

Get the one with ERG mode, if you spending this much you might as well have it. And as mentioned, don't be scared to a look a second hand.

Enjoy!

Have to agree with all the comments on ERG - essential for structured workouts. I also got a second hand trainer (KICKR 2) - 13k km and still going strong. I would also recommend getting a direct drive trainer over the "wheel on" trainers - unless you like changing tires ;)

Thanks for the input. I won't lie I am a bit hesitant on spending north of 5k on used electronics. This is not to say there are no good deals or units that are in good condition, but that tuition would be steep for me if it were to turn out to be a school fees situation.
