I used the virtual gearing once to see what it involved; never again.

In the Trainer Settings menu, at Workout Resistance Mode, is it on ERG or one of the other settings? In the other settings, the Virtual Gearing settings could have an impact.

if you have a keyboard linked to the device (laptop, not phone) the shortcut to change between modes is ā€œEā€, for erg.

I have not tried it at all - hoping to hit the right key in a race while barely keeping up, recipe for failure. Maybe with Zwift Play style controllers.

Have a look at some of the races - there is the Heroica series that started this week (stage 1 is available multiple times a day until this Sunday), then every few days: https://ecycling-classifications.com/s/heroica-3
And also next week from Wednesday, the Grand Tour available at multiple times throughout each day.

The 7pm-8pm GMT+2 timeslot is currently the one with the most riders. A bit late, but I've really been enjoying the Monday Mixer races.

Seeing more SA flags on my early morning rides.

So I now done a few more rides and messed around in the settings a bit.

I ride in Erg on the free rides but i like the slope settings where you can set say at 50% which makes a 10% hill feel like 5% and same with the wind factor.

When comparing to the ride feel - IV is far closer to outside rides than Z or MW, the climbing just feels more realistic on the pedals. Also if you stop pedaling on 0% slope you tend to coast for a lot longer, so if you riding along a flat section you can freewheel similar like you would do on an outside ride.

The other cool feature is the Auto Release of ERG mode which will work lekka if you in a training session - I will always remember the spiral of doom on TrainerRoad sessions when they got to difficult

Another nice feature is you can colour code your own kit.

Havnt figured out the virtual gearing yet, but fo rmy use i probably dont need it.

One thing i note is my windows laptop gets fairly warm and the fan kicks in virtually as soon as IV is booted - My laptop is a fairly serious gaming spec. Nevertheless it seems to stop after riding for 15 or 20 min.

Up to now my money would be on IV if I was to choose between Z - MW - TR(All be it a different concept)Ā

Last night's Monday Mixer/Heroica race was a bit hectic.

The route was short, only about 24km, but the pace was at a completely different level than the previous weeks. A few of the teams brought their best riders, and they attacked each other relentlessly, leaving the rest simply hanging on for as long as we could with no hope of some recovery anywhere. All the riders in the top 10 had a NP of at least 350W.

Even if my legs weren't a bit tired from the weekend's Karoo to Coast, there is no way I could have kept up with the front group over the last two climbs. I lost 7 seconds up to the velodrome, and eventually finished in the second group just less than a minute back from the winner.

77 human riders started, and 70 finished. But single pen, normally it gets split into 3 or 4 with bots.

A group of event organisers are creating a 5-day 6 stage event. Starting on 25 September, to 29 September, with Stage 1 (the Prologue) and Stage 2 both on the 25th.
Each stage has multiple time-slots, every 2 to 3 hours.

For those that missed it, the iV Grand Tour was a blast!

I been doing some pace work with one of the pacers - Slowest one, because i'm fat and unfit.

I always try stay on the pacers wheel, but find if i drop off and need to catch up i always end up sprinting past the pacer and then have to slow down to wait for him to catch up.Ā

Any amount of added pressure on the pedals causes me to into aero or standup sprint - Other riders arounf me never seem to do this when they coming past

I been riding in ERG mode with data smoothing set to None / Instant - Could this be the reason ?

What have you guys got your trainer settings on as far as Workout resistance mode, I normally have it in Erg mode but thinking of changing it to Terrain mode specifically for pacing

ERG more only works in a workout mode.

I ride with the pacers 2-3 times per week. My default setting is Terrain (matches world), and only lose the group when Iā€™m not concentrating.Ā

Try ride a little harder than the group pace, so you close the gap gradually. Have a look at your recent effort (colour bar at bottom of screen) and try not go more than one colour up, eg. if you were in grey, donā€™t go to green. If blue, donā€™t go into yellow. You will eventually close the gap.

Alternatively, if you have a keyboard available, use J to join another rider. This will allow you to join the group without having to surge. You will only lose the distance between you and the place you join the group. Will show a straight line on your Strava file.

Are you doing a workout while riding with the pacer bot? If not, I'm not sure the resistance mode makes a difference.

The sprinting animation is based on what your Ftp is set to, perhaps yours is set very low so any effort is significantly high triggering the sprint animation?

No workout just jumping in with the pace group

I wonder if my data smoothing has something to do with it as i have it set to Instant - Maybe a 3 second smoothing would even things out a bit

I have FTP set at 200, havn't done a test in a while but i imagine it woujld be about 180 - 190 at the moment - ye ye I know its a bit piss poor but i'm working on itĀ Ā

Power smoothing is the average of 3s, meaning less variation on the display. It doesnā€™t smooth your actual power, only the displayed power.
