Recently switched to flats, as I only wear Adidas sneakers going for 5ten free rider was a no brainer, imported via BikeInn on special still came in at R1100. The leat ones are too light, not strong and wear out quick. The canvas 5ten is just stronger and better for the endurotrail riding I do now. For anything else I would recommend clip in shoes all the way no doubt.

5ten freeride pro + deity Tmac is the closest thing you’ll get to feeling clipped in on flat pedals imo. I actually don't always like how solid the connection is, once you put your foor down you literally have to lift to move. If you arent used to it you find yourself fidgeting for the first few meters to get your foot in the right spot. At least on clipless you have float.

The Adidas rubber deffo feels softer in hand than the 2FO - but my 2FO’s are clipless so cant comment on how they feel compared to 5ten on platform pedals. I’d buy whatever is available, and that means 2FO for most of us.

just dont even bother with those Etnies shoes that you can find locally, those with the Michelin soles. Those things are Semenuk etc signatures for a reason….they are made to not be totally locked in for tricks and stuff imo. If thats what you want…then great. I hate mine…use them in the garden now since they are waterproof. They were the reason for the 12 stitches on my left shin lol

While on the topic of flat vs. clips. So I had a crash a few weeks back after landing a smallish jump on a blind trail. First run commit and I ended up too slow to clear the gap and got bucked on the knuckle. My right foot lost momentary connection to the pedal and slipped off and got pinned between the pedal and the ground, bending my foot the wrong way. I'm still of the opinion I at minimum fractured it. First road ride back again today. Anyway, I'm thinking if I was clipped in I was going for the ride over the bars and straight to the ER via medevac as I was not exactly on a groomed trail at the time. So now I'm trying to decide if clipped is better than flat or should I stay with flats while riding trails.

I have Spank Oozy pedals and also have never had a slip. My soles are so worn in now they almost clip into the pins 😂
Alright. I’ll have a look at the Spaz and the 510’s when the time (bonus😂) comes.
Thanks guys.

My first set of 2FO did about 5 000km on trails, when I added road rides to the mix.

This set become my road shoes.  I bought another set of 2FO for MTB.

Road set is at about 15 000km.  Sure, the pins have worn into the soles, still works perfectly on the road.  Top of the shoes still look good.

Fair to say that I am a happy owner.

Mix of wider feet and high bridge means I struggle to find shoes that fit properly.

2FO fits, and lasts.

Man this post made me check how much I have on my impact pro’s and it is half that. Apart from the right sole coming loose and a small pin wear hole in the left they are good. 😂

Only reason I have some idea of this, is that I got the second set just before getting the "roadie" (HT with gravel tyres, used on the road only ... apparently I am not allowed to call it a gravel bike).  The ebike comes with an odometer, which clocked over to "0km" a few months back, i.e. is has clocked over 10 000km.  Granted it was a demo, so I am now at about 9 500km  on this bike.

As with so many things bike related  ... less wear on the shoes on the road, as compared to trail riding.  Those soles take a pounding as we work through the single tracks .....

True. I do a boat load of walking in mine also. Lots of pushing up hills… I also only know as I started using mine around the same time I built my last bike and started using Probike Garage.
Thats cool that the e-bike has an odometer.

I will always keep recommending 5tens. I have the freeriders and nukeproof flats (with the grub screws) and this is exactly what happens to me. It's incredible how sticky they are. Nothing else I've tried compares.

Scary stuff. Hope the foot is healing. For me, I don't really see any advantage to being clipped in on trails, only the downside as you suggest may have happened. So my vote would be to stay flat on the trails.
