Learnt about this on BookFace last night.

It's a pity Darryl might not have considered taking over (I can't confirm nor deny this). They are having a clearance sale, I'm hoping I can pick up some stuff for bargain-basement prices.

On a related note, Decathlon, the French mega-retailer for sports equipment, is shutting up shop too. The Alberton branch is already closed, and I'm told the Boksburg one is clearing stock now. Strike while the iron is hot folks.

I bought my first MTB from Tony (an awful Nishiki Hardrock) in 1993ish. His shop in Bedford Centre was a landmark to me. I wonder if he tried to sell the shop at all? I think it still has a lot of pull in the area

I supported him for many years, until my girls were born, and when he moved out of Bedford Centre (BC). It was very convenient to get something when shopping at BC.

Also bumped into Derek, his trusty side-kick at the shop, when I went to get coffee (beans) from my local roaster.

Two wildly different scenarios with no relation between the two though?

Tony has been approaching retirement for a while now, it's also long deserved and the timing is perfect. Generations of riders have been through those doors. Wishing him all the best, he leaves a legacy to be proud of.

Decathlon aren't "shutting shop" Some branches may close and move/clear stock, while others expand or change scale, there are some new locations in the pipeline. Normal business in a competitive environment.
