I am trying to find the measures of the reach of various manufacturers' shifters, in the latest versions 10s/11s/12s, disc brakes or rim brakes, mechanical or electronic, unfortunately I have not found any data on the matter. Does any of you have any reliable data? Since I'm looking to move from Ultegra R8000 mechanic with rim brakes to Ultegra Di2 12v disc (R8100), there is anyone who know which is the difference in length to the "base of the hoods" , I'm tryng to understand if I have to buy shorter stem, is there anyone who can help me?
splat Posted November 11 Posted November 11 Don't change your stem, but rather look at the reach of your handle bars. Older bars were set at about 100mm Newer bars are about 80mm or so to compensate for the longer hoods of disc brakes DieselnDust and Rone69 2

Look, my opinion there is based of bike fitter james videos and i have actually installed an 80mm stem on my gravel/allroad bike.. the front end does get a lot twitchier bellow 90.. i did not feel comfortable with it.. went back to 90 after two shortish rides

I TRIED IT FOR MYSELF AND I WASNT COMFORTABLE WITH IT.. the bike handling definitely became a more wild than i was comfortable with🤷🏼♂️.. “i feel like im taking crazy pills.!”🤦♂️

Gravel terrain maybe a twitchier front end can be beneficial for navigating tougher more technical sections.. that would make sense to me.. buuut im not that confident enough at my skill level.. got the 80 stem in the cupboard.. maybe again one day🤦♂️🤣

I would suggest looking at changing meds from crazy pills to Ritalin cause all I said as a general is not suggesting listening to BFJ. Unreal.

Not everyone on Bikehub is an armchair expert, some have real world experience too. You're working off a sample size of one, I guarantee you that John has a few more reference points. I went from 110mm to 80mm stem and at the same time went from 440mm to 420mm bars on my road bike I cant say I feel the twitchiness you describe. Bike Dewing 1
