Hi everyone,

Im testing out maxiss rekon race 2.4 wt tyres at the moment and need some recommendations from you guys.

Terrain is for attekwas, epic, general trail riding, and all the normal western cape races.

What i need to know after my first few rides at more or less 1.2bar front and 1.3 bar rear, i am 85kg riding a specialized epic 120mm travel.

1. Is everyone happy with 2.4 rear as it felt a bit slow.

2. What pressures do you ride them.

i am surprise about how much grip they have for a semi slick.

I would def opt for a faster rolling tyre on the rear at slightly higher pressure.

Rekon race/Aspen with higher pressure for attakwas for sure would be better than the bulky Rekon.

It is the low pressure making it feel slow

I have a Rekon Race on my second bike which I normally use for weekday rides on tar. I took it out on a trail last Friday for the first time and found out it has near zero grip. The moment I even touched the brakes the rear locked up and slid out. That tyre is super fast rolling but grip was sorely lacking. Maybe it was because I don't normally ride that bike on trails ( my Stumpy EVO was in for some maintenance) but even so, I used this as my primary bike before I got the Stumpy and never felt the bike being so twitchy in the grip department. For speed it feels great (I beat my previous best time on the Faircape trail by around 8 minutes between the Stumpy and the Camber last Friday). But the grip level makes me nervous.

Hi Nico,

Aspen 2.4 WT front and rear

They have a more "round" profile especially the sides and makes cornering much better and faster  that the recons race.

Tyre insert on the rear running 1.7 bar, front 1.6 👌

Genuine question and not to start a huge debate but are these pressures so high to prevent punctures? I run those pressures on my gravel bike on 45mm tires, on 2.4s I go down to 1.4 back and 1.3 front.

It’s been a few years since I ran those, they’re a great tyre. However i preferred running an aspen on the back. But for more hardy races like epic I think recon races all round is a bullet proof option. There are faster, lighter and objectively better tyres, but for a tough all rounder the recon race is great. At 70-72kg on 100mm dual sus I was running 0.8-0.9 bar out front and 1.2-1.4 on the rear for general riding, for tarred training rides ect I would run about 1.5-1.7 bar all round.

I run them higher due to all the rocks we have here in Worcester, lots of slate!
On the other side of the mountain i run lower pressure for trailseeker(wellington) as there's way less rocks.
the OP revered to the attakwas and what i've heard its rather rocky terrain so id rather run a slightly higher pressure and avoid punctures.

Wider rims and lower pressures on a MTB will result in the tyre rolling on the rim, burping the air. It's probably best to stay around 1.8 on rocky terrain to ensure grip and compliance of the sidewall. Lower could work but because the rim is wider than gravel bike rims you could end up with pinching the tyre and dinging the rim. In a race that would be a problem.

I have done a few tests with them yesterday playing around on different pressures repaeating the same segment, 1 tar and 1 singletrack, then copied all the data into chat gpt, and the outcome for the best climbing pressure for me was 1.4 rear and 1.2 front. I could definately also feel 1.4 rear is faster than 1.6 and 1.2.

On downhills however and maybe it just me because i come from longer travel bikes in the past and also some enduro motorcycles way back, is the 1.4 still feel chattery and i get alot of harsh trail feedback in the rear at 1.4. But in the end my downhill times were also better with less"effort"

Still playing around, propably not something to do 1.5 weeks before a race😬

After yesterdays coffee ride I couldn't help to notice that everyone is running high tyre pressures compared to mine... (by feel)

they running 1,6bar rear and myself 1,7 (according to my trusty floorpump gauge back home) but mine feels way softer when feeling by hand. Another mate pulled his ryder compressor with digital gauge, to a shock they all measured 1,6bar(rear) tempted to see why mine feels so soft by hand, plugged it into mine and the gauge read 1,1bar rear.... shocked I measured the front.... 0,9bar 🤣

Back at home i plugged the floorpump and the readings remained 1,7 rear and 1,6 front.... lets just say I am leaving the chat and invested in a proper digital gauge... 🤣🙈

now running 1,4 bar rear actual(2,2 on the floorpump) and 1,25 front.... removed the tyre liner and the control is way better and much faster 😉

these bigger volume tyres that are now standard are interesting on the tyre pressures. I still prefer a 2.0/2.1 tyre but maybe I am just getting old. I have 2,3's on currently but you can literally see the whole tyre folding sideways off the rim under side load.

On the topic of pressure gauges. be very very very e....ing careful with them.

I went to a petrol station to seat a tubeless tyre, the gauge was definitely broken. Anyway at what the gauge said was 2,4bar the tyre exploded off the rim in my face and unfortunately in the back of a BMW X1. My ears were ringing, I had stans sealant up my nose, in my eyes and all over the entire car interior. Rim was ruined, tyre wrecked. Every petrol attendant was on the floor.

The next day I went and pumped my car tyre to 2.2 on that gauge and then checked it with a proper gauge and 2.2 on the gauge was actually 3,4 bar.

I have never used a petrol station air pump on anything again. I bought a compressor and a nice gauge setup for home after that.
