Polar Oddity

I have the S625x which comes with a foot pod to track distance and I also use it when I ride my MTB. Apart from the bling carbon look, the 725x is exactly the same watch.

I use the watch for Adventure Racing purely to record heart rate and altitude changes and I neither wear the foot pod for the hiking / trail running sections nor do I utilise the speed/distance recording options for the MTB legs, yet, and this is were my confusion arises.

After downloading the resulting exercise, be it a short sprint race or a 135k race like last weekend, the watch has recorded "distance" as if I had set it up to record both the running and biking legs.

Note that the watch is setup in running mode as standard and if I want

to record distance on the MTB, I then change it over (which I never did

this past weekend).

Of the 135k's, 40k's was the hiking/trail running and 80k's the MTB leg, the balance, 15k's was paddling in Katse Dam, so how does the watch record 151 k's ??

Does it somehow still pick up the revolutions from the Speed Sensor and if so, why is there a difference of 71k's?

Has anyone else experienced this oddity ?

Maybe its time to get a Suunto Wink

Hmmmm... Do you think you could ask one question at a time? Geek  Have no answers for you except that I have seen some impressive things from Suunto, happen to know Mr Suunto. As soon as I got the bucks I am going that route! I beleive there will be a Suunto stand at the 94.7 expo, stop by the stand, the guy is very friendly.

Thug....erm, Mr Thug....erm, wait....

Oddball

My guess would be that your Polar was picking up signals from somebody else's bike.  And foot.

Not a great theory, but it's just a guess.

Had you chosen a "mode"  (hold down bottom right button while HR is displayed, i.e., after first press of Big Red Button) that did not record running or data or bike data?

Nope, I was the only one in the team wearing a Polar

and

The speed recording function was On, in running mode, which makes it more of a conundrum.

Contact Polar on 011 805 1028.  Let us know what they have to say.  They do have software bugs as well.  Other day I picked up a bug for them on the PC Software.

I spoke to one of the techies and his explanation is that the watch is picking up intereference. But I'm not really happy with that so I've emailed Harald !

Will let you know what the boss man says !

All righty,

I've had some feedback from Polar and this is what Harald says :

Based on your raw data file the speed measurement

was active. Unfortunately the data file does not distinguish between cycling

speed or running speed. The speed sensor and the S1 Foot Pod are using the

transmission code. This is why you have to select the specific speed mode; bike

or run. I can only presume that as your unit was in the running speed mode and

it was picking up the bike speed sensor. This was the  reason for the speed

readings. The error in distance could then be explained by the different

algorithms use to calculate the run speed or bike speed.

Next time I'll just switch off the speed sensor !
