Oh... I thought it had to do with the height of the midget stripper dancing inside...

MTB derailleurs have lesbian strippers mud wrestling each other.

So when do we see a full size version of the new avatar ?

For all intends and purposes, the two terms are meaningless. All you are concerned about is what DIFFERENCE in sprocket sizes can it handle. This is measured in number of teeth and the formula takes front and back sprockets into account.

Back sprockets.

If you had a small back sprocket of 12 teeth and a large one of 23 teeth, the difference is 11.

Front Sprockets.

If your large one is 53 and small one 39, the difference is 14.

Now add 11 and 14 and you have 25.

Make sure your derailer has a cacapability to take up the slack in the difference of 25. In other words, if it is rated as a 28m you're OK. If it is rated as a 20, it won't be able to shift into the largest sprocket combinations without ripping the arse out of the jockey spring.

There is no Super Short cage.

Short cage is that found on any road bike

Medium cage or MTB Short is designated "GS" on Shimano derailleurs

Long cage is that found onmost MTB's and touring bikes and is designated "SGS"

Fanie if you are a "real" climber take the short cage.  If you wear lenderhosen cycling shirts like Marius used to, then go for the long cage, or else you won't be able to use the 27 gear.

Embarrassed Unless I shed 10 kg. and double my hill climbing trianing I will not be a 'real' climber and i love food to much! Also got a compact on my bike so, nope not 'real' climber.

but local shop is R 65-00 more expensive than crc so i'll just pop down and have them and let them help me with the correct cage length.
