Hey every one I am not sure if there is already a place for these kind of questions but here it goes.

1. Yes I am new at this hence the questions

2. I know a lot of these questions are going to be answered differently from person to person

3. I have recently started riding bike again in must be over 10 years I am currently using my moms Raleigh M-Trax front and rear shocks etc... very cool bike I have been having a blast with it, I rode this weekend on one of the UGE adventure sprint races it was awsome. S now this is where I ask for your opinions. I would now like to buy myself a bike but dont know what to look for or which is suggested, I prefere the offraod trails but will be doing a lot of on road training I am how ever a bit of a loose canon on the bike if I see any kind of launch I will attempt to get some kind of airtime. I have about R 3000.00 to spend on a bike and dont mind going preowned / loved

so what advice does any one have for me and i know right now the best advice would be add some extra cash and buy an awsome carbon frame etc... but we all know it would be awsome to do something like that but flow is low

Welcome Habib and good luck finding a bike. Have a look at the classifieds you might find something there.

OK it is clear you should stay away from any sort of road bike . For your budget you can get a good Hardtail . Like Shaun said , either look on this site or the junkmail for good deals .

When you say Hard tail does that mean one with out rear shocks and what would the reason be to get one with or with out rear shock if thats what you refer to as hard tail

Yes a Hardtail would be a mountain bike with just a shock in the front . Lighter and some say faster than a Duel Suspension but without the comfort .

There are many, many ways to determine right size and then in the end you get on the bike to find out that it does not fit . So from the start jump on the bike and feel it out

If you are going to take part in a few adventure races then I would recommend a hardtail and not a dual suspension unless you do the very long adventure races.

It is much easier for your seconders to load a hardtail onto a bike rack than it is to load a dual suspension as a dual requires a fancy bracket to be able to fit onto most racks.

For hike-a-bike sections a hardtail is usually much easier to carry. A dual suspension often has a shock positioned under the top bar and you can't carry it comfortably. A hardtail usually weighs less than a dual too.
