Le Tour, Maties are developing riders, like Mike thats moving up to the pro circuit. Dan and Erik also came through the ranks and improved a lot being at Maties. AS we are mostly a student club, we dont have juniors to speak of. There are other students coming through the ranks, like Johhny kritzinger, now going to ride for Harmony MTB team. WE cant tell a rider to ride more and study less. Unless they will make BIG bucks as a pro. Maties will allways have a team in the Giro and try and race upcountry as the  budget allows. WE are too glad if a rider that developed at Maties get a chance to ride for a REAL team.

The thing is there are alot of riders that go upcountry and never take the risk of going overseas cause the get into a good team that pays for there living costs and never take a risk of going overseas,

If I got the chance to race oversea's I would pack up and go in a second. You can always come home and race again...

But the times spent oversea's would be priceless

If we take your argument one step further then no rider in JHB is worth sponsoring because all the good riders are in Europe...

Sorry BikeMax, I always find your posts very informative but that comment I do not agree with Im sorry. There are plenty of good riders here that either never got the chance or had the balls to go.

Colonel - I do not disagree with you here, but my point was that the best riders are in Europe. I am sure that many SA riders could step up if they got there, but for whatever reason they have not done so in numbers and so have stayed a level behind.

think about this, RSA have one cyclist riding for FDJ (for the life i can't remember his name) , if we classify BL'world as a RSA, Jhb based team then all of our best riders are based in the RSA and in Jhb.  JHB is the place to be to make a living from cycling a bicycle but CT is the place to be to own a bicycle shop.

butafly, I think you are missing the point completely!

Why should a sponsor only sponsor teams in JHB? That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Sponsorship needs to exist at all levels in order for a sport to develop and prosper. That is how a sport grows, its a basic principle of developing riders through the ranks. If there are no sponsorships at the club level in the western cape then less riders will move up through the ranks and graduate to racing in JHB and Europe.

I have been involved in finding sponsors for UCT for the past couple years. I can tell you that there are a hell of a lot of good reasons that a sponsor wants to sponsor a team racing in the western cape. Abvest has moved to JHB and we therefore needed to find a new sponsor for next year.

All the feedback from Abvest over the past 2 years has been very positive, and I'm sure if not for them relocating to JHB they would have been onboard next year. Luckily for us we have found a great new sponsor for next year who is very enthusiatic and both UCT cycling and our new sponsor will benefit from this relationship.

The point is simply that companies want to sponsor riders in the western cape, and further more sponsorship is very necessary for our sport to develop. Instead of telling sponsors to only sponsor in JHB butafly perhaps you should better use your time supporting the sponsors!
