Canaris Posted December 15, 2006 Author Posted December 15, 2006 On the shimano debate, all things Italian are fast flashy, desireable and totally unreliable (or very sensitive to fine tuning). Their men, their cars, their women, their bikes, their weather ext ext. Japanese are very efficient, reliable and unfortunately boring (designs most acquired after development costs and ideas have been paid by other and then improved upon). It seems that supporters of each camp exhibit the same qualities. (often in negative doses)
E1A104 Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 All the Shimano bunnies sing along ...... "We are Family, I've got all my sisters with me ...." I have both groupsets, and both work well with subtle differences. The big plus for me is the size and shape of the Campy Ergo shifters - I just find them more comfortable.

Hype Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 Velo speaks the truth. Campy looks the bomb. As for drug use goofs, there are some riders that don't dope but they're near the back so you don't know who they are. Probably the best not to take drugs was Charly Mottet who came 4th on the TDf in the late 80's. Willy Voet was the guy from Festina who was caught with a car full of drugs. He wrote a book and spilled the beans on everybody but he said that Mottet was completely against drugs - and it would have been impossible for Mottet to have taken drugs without the other riders and team members knowing. So I guess it it possible to do well without drugs but it's incredibly rare.
E1A104 Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 Actually ....... Campy looks the dogs b*llocks !!!!!
Mudsimus Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 Speaking about Willy's book...very interesting! For those of you that havent read it yet..do so! I totally forgot the name..any help Hype?
Hype Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 "Breaking the Chain". A real eye-opener for those that haven't read it.

casspir Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 Hype said: And you listed Campy not supplying MTB's as a bad reason but now you're using road riders as a good example for Shimano. If road is the standard then let's stick to road. What about SRAM? Also better than Shimano on a MTB
Hype Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 Big H brought up the fact that Shimano has the market share. Just guessing here but perhaps one of the reasons is that most of the bigger bike makes (which are non-Italian), Giant, Trek, etc are sold with Shimano. I would think this is because of production capacity. Campag is finely crafted so they cannot churn out as many groupsets as the mass-produced Shimano. So if Giant ask for 100 000 groupsets a year campag can't supply. Good things are rare.

Hype Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 Yeah but I was referring to riders who DON'T use drugs.

Companies like Scott and Fuji only spec some of their high end bikes with Campy. In fact, i've only seen a few Italian bikes with Mirage/Veloce groupos, and i must admit they are a bit pricey compared to a mass produced tiagra/105 bike.
