On the shimano debate, all things Italian are fast flashy, desireable and totally unreliable (or very sensitive to fine tuning). Their men, their cars, their women, their bikes, their weather ext ext.

 

 

 

Japanese are very efficient, reliable and unfortunately boring (designs most acquired after development costs and ideas have been paid by other and then improved upon).

 

 

 

It seems that supporters of each camp exhibit the same qualities. (often in negative doses)

I have both groupsets, and both work well with subtle differences. The big plus for me is the size and shape of the Campy Ergo shifters - I just find them more comfortable.

As for drug use goofs, there are some riders that don't dope but they're near the back so you don't know who they are. Probably the best not to take drugs was Charly Mottet who came 4th on the TDf in the late 80's.

 

 

 

Willy Voet was the guy from Festina who was caught with a car full of drugs. He wrote a book and spilled the beans on everybody but he said that Mottet was completely against drugs - and it would have been impossible for Mottet to have taken drugs without the other riders and team members knowing.

 

 

 

So I guess it it possible to do well without drugs but it's incredibly rare.

Big H brought up the fact that Shimano has the market share. Just guessing here but perhaps one of the reasons is that most of the bigger bike makes (which are non-Italian), Giant, Trek, etc are sold with Shimano.

 

 

 

I would think this is because of production capacity. Campag is finely crafted so they cannot churn out as many groupsets as the mass-produced Shimano. So if Giant ask for 100 000 groupsets a year campag can't supply.

I guess you guess correct, especially with the cheaper groupos like Sora and Tiagra, where campy doesn't seem to compete very well. Companies like Scott and Fuji only spec some of their high end bikes with Campy.

 

In fact, i've only seen a few Italian bikes with Mirage/Veloce groupos, and i must admit they are a bit pricey compared to a mass produced tiagra/105 bike.
