Stolen Bikes

Recommended Posts

I have recently seen a number of seriously nice racing bikes (mostly roadies) in our area lately and I have to question whether the "owner / rider" actually had the budget to buy such a spiffy machine in the first place.

I mean the okes clothes are all ragged, he obviously does not have that kind of miney to shell out for a bike of that quality. Some of these bikes are far more flash than I will ever be able to aspire to own.

Don't these guys ever get pulledoff by police to prove ownership?

What is the "done thing?" Would the cops do anything about trying to recover some other hard working dudes Avalanche.

One ofthe reasons I am seriously debating keeping my peugeot going is the reduced chance of fighting off some crazed lunatic with a 9 mil or 38 trying to affirmatively shop my bike while out riding.

I wear no jewelry, carry no cash and have an old cell phone with a pay-as-you-go so that in the event this happens, I loose little. Old bike, Old phone and nothing of value.

If I upgrade, I increase the chance of being jacked exponentially. Insurance aside, this is not right.

Sorry, I'm still lost... doesn't matter how old your peugeot is, no avalanche will be an upgrade...

I think police have bigger fish to fry at this stage. Also, the guys riding the bikes are most likely not the thieves/hijackers. They're just the guys who desperately want transport and are willing to pay R200 for your R20k bike.

I'm also not sure that the average bike jacker knows the difference between a cheap and expensive bike.

OK, (Avalanche maybe a bad example) there are other bikes that are around that are obviously worth far more than the Avalanche.

When I looked at it, it looked very flash, latest 105 groupsets and still worth far more than I think the "current owner" can afford.

Some of these bikes look like they "belong" to people other than the current "rider".

Kind of like your gardner arriving at work in a Merc or BM and you drive a VW.

It just made me think about what SAPS do other than sit around doing little.

and where the hell are you riding that you feel the need to carry a .38?

I don't carry a weapon at all.

I live in Albarton and ride the Allewynspoort road and staircase on a fairly regular basis. There are some well know cases of bike-jackings aorund the area and I have met a few guys who have stared down the barrel of 38's and 9 mils and lost some fancy bikes to the jackers.

Last time I checked, it was still a crime to deal in stolen goods so if you're offered some 20k bike for R200 and you buy it, you are considered just as guilty as the thief who took it in the first place.

I saw an ADT guy pulling two dudes off the road yesterday on bikes...two mountain bikes, looked like TNT1's old avalanche, so may have been a waste of time... at least he's giving it a go!

Also begs the question...how are the cops going to tell a 2K bike from a 20K bike?

Maybe riding in slops pushing DA pedals (with heels over the spindles) might be the first clue?

Or my next favourite, guy riding a pink girls bike with tassles on the bars and basket! Whahhaaaaaa!!! You picked that out yourself did you...yeah right!! it was dark wasn't it!

At first I ridiculed your argument. However, travelling home on Corlett drive on Friday, I saw your point... There was this brand new A4 with a bike on the back, bike was a 15 year old at least Cannondale with Tiagra on it.... The car was way out of the bikes league, something fishy going on there, I was gonna pull the guy over and make a citizen's arrest or something, but then I heard a Windhoek calling me from the pub so I had to go...

And some times i see guys walking to work wearing western province tracksuit tops, or tops from various schools, like bishops and Herschel. Maybe the pinky was handed down. Does look out of place.

Means nothing.

My son goes to RBHS and a lot of his old school kit is given to the maid or to the folks at the Haven.
