I have nothing against quads themselves, if you ride within your limits and know what you are doing. They are allot of fun, IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING.

i feel desperately sorry for the whole family, but i'm also angry at teh folks - they really should've made the kid wear a helmet. and now they're going to have to live with the knowledge and guilt of their bad choice. i truly hope that they all learn from it AND that anyone else reading about it learns from it.

hopefully the scars will be minimal and the kid will be up an about soon - the report does say that luckily he has not suffered from any brain or neurological damage so let's all just hope that he doesn't need the op mentioned.

I hate quad bikes. Just Like I hate jet ski's.

The same type of people purchase both. The same people seem to have the same bad attitudes toward other trail/road/water/sea users.

They both suck' date=' and both bad for the enviorment!!!!

Dont get me started!!!

FFS! This really makes me mad. I mean the parents deserve all the pain this causes them, but FFS man the dad is a copper. Doesn't he know/care that apart from the helmet issue, that you can't ride a quad on public roads?

I trust that when their time comes, that they are inflicted with an eternity of arnie telling them to not forget the helmets...

Fockin a-holes.

Heard the parents this morning on 702.  According to them the intention was never for the kid to ride the bike at that paticular moment.  The dad just wanted to familiarise the kid with the bike and was planning on taking him out on a later stage.  The bike got started and the little guy opened the throttle started panicking and instead of letting go of the throttle he clamped on it and things went out of control.

I feel sorry for the whole family and hope for the best.  I don't know how many of the hubbers here who said the parents get what they deserved are actually parents themselves.  But what I can tell you is that NOT A SINGLE parent can turn around and look back and say to himself that they have not made a mistake that could or did have servere consequences.  In most cases we are lucky when accidents happens but some parents have to pay the utlimate price.

Actually I am the father of two.

Some things that leap off the page at me about this tragic event.

My 3 year old or my 6 year old can beg me till they are all the colours of the rainbow cause they want an quad bike, and I unlike the parents in the story, know how to say no. In my mind it is not a suitable "toy" for a child that age. I say toy, as the father said he was shocked that a 50cc (as if that is relevant) "designed for small children" could go so fast. Does he expect us to take him seriously?

As Colonel points out, there are plenty of child MX racers. I raced MX from the age of 6. But there is a correct and in-correct place to practice such things. The public pavement is no such place.

I have huge sympathy for the parents. My only doubt is that they wont see the wood for the trees. A policeman should know the law. He shouldn't be anywhere near letting a child on an un-roadworthy machine on a public street.

On the helmet issue? No brainer there. I shudder to suggest it, but I doubt the parenst even bought a helmet for the kid. If they did why wasn't he wearing it? He's 4. He's not in control, or at least he shouldn't be.

Don't confuse irresponsibility with accidental.

This is axactly why some people need to go for parental classes and aptitude tests to see if they will be fit parents.

My son turns 4 next month, and there is no way he will even get on a quad bike, nevermind own one at his age. How the hell can someone expect a child to contol a machine like that when they are barely able to ride a bicycle? I wonder if that kid's training wheels have been removed from his bike yetConfused

I feel very sorry for the boy and hope for a full recovery for his part. As for the parents, I hope they have learnt a new word in their vocabulary....NO!!!!!

Wow, don't pop an artery, dude.  I agree, some quad riders are destructive and inconsiderate. But how do you get to the conclusion that jet-ski's are bad for the environment?

I bet his parents already feel bad enough as it is. I hope the kid will be o.k.

I read an interesting comment earlier about this incident. Its not possible to wrap our kids in a cocoon an hope that nothing happens to them. Let them be kids and enjoy themselves. Years ago as kids our parents rode horses bare back and came off quite often, they rode scramblers on the farms and crashed often, they built really scary slides from trees and broke arms and legs quite often. But this didnt kill them, it only made them enjoy their childhood so much more.

So these parents made a mistake by not making the kid wear a helmet, but atleast they let him do something a little dangerous wich he enjoys. Unlike all the fat kids sitting in front of the tv.

So I really, for the kids sake, hope they get him back onto his quad.
