Whether you like Lance or not he has got the power to put us on the map. I hope the organisers take cognisance of this.

From Lance's Twitter feed: www.twitter.com/lancearmstrong

Meccarobin Asks:

@lancearmstrong are you doing that race in Cape Town, first week of march? about 9 hours ago from TwitterPod

Lance Responds:

@meccarobin not in 2009, maybe 2010. about 3 hours ago from web in reply to meccarobin

There was some rumours going around that he wanted to do it this year. Especially after he said he wanted to come race in SA in 2009. That would have meant either worldsview or Giro. But no sponsor could be found for one of these events. Although PPA stepped in for Giro. The event was downgraded from UCI2.1 ranking to 2.2. Which means Lance can't ride even if he wants to, as he is part of the protour.

Pity none of the corporates could have realised the power behind such kind of sponsorship.

Ps: estimated crowd for the 6 days of tour down under to see lance's 1st race was a totaal of 700 000(out of a 12mil population) lining the roads of Australia.

If he had committed to riding one of the SA events, the sponsors would have fallen over each other to sponsor them... I heard from a very reliable source that if the UCI hadn't bent the rules for TdU, he would've done World's View Challenge... Just wasn't meant to be. Pity.

Odd heads will say "who the hell  care's" but i'm certain there will be a record interest, hell i might go down early and endure a few extra days in CT to watch.

What about his appearance fee?

Sponsors can barely cover costs without his bill attached...

Easy ... the organisers of the Giro del Capo needs to make a concession for Lance ... his entry fee for the event = double his appearance fee ... this way SA scores at least US$90000 ...

I think it will be great for SA cycling. business will throw sponsorship money @ it... it will have a huge ripple effect. even if he is a egotistical chop

It would be great for business, and may have some short term positive spin-offs for cycling in this country, perhaps even for CANSA.  LA is about the brand and that brand is worth a lot of moola.

Similar situation as was trying to get Tiger to play in the Nedbank Challenge......his appearance fee was something like 3 times the winners prize money......

And he might do the Epic!

He should rather do the Epic then the Giro. Mush more interest in it worldwide.

dudes, it'll never happen.

Theres far more interest in watching 30 grown men grope and fondle each other over a pigs bladder than there is in Lance Armstrong or cycling in general.

If SA as a nation can move past it's greekoroman fantasies then perhaps we can get our cycling events enough sponsorship to be considered worthy internal status.

Only tha MTB race has it currently.

turn off the rugby, watch more cycling.

There seems to be a fair bit of interest in cycling when rugby players try their hand at it.  Every Epic needs about three rugby players to get the local journo's to write about it... Willehond2009-07-29 08:24:30
