We're still struggling to deal with Craig's tragedy ... and now Colin's too. It's not okay for a vehicle to drive past a cyclist and "just" miss him/her, because there is no shoulder. A bike can change it's line by up to a meter in seconds ... due to glass, poor road surface, wind, or whatever. I'll say it again - there need to be measures in place to keep vehicles from passing so close to cyclists (as mentioned before, motorists in parts of Europe are fined heavily, just for passing a cyclist with less than a meter berth). And we're on African time, so the 30 seconds that a motorist loses by slowing down behind a cyclist until it's safe to pass, won't be noticed anyway!!!

Condolences to Colin's family and friends, our thoughts are with you in this painful time.

Firstly my condolences to Colin's family and friends, a real tragedy.

I might be wrong but it seems the Western Cape is having more than it's fair share of fatalities recently. Has anyone looked into possible reasons for this, for instance are there common factors between accidents. Maybe someone who has info on the recent accidents could summarise the type of incident with time of day, type of road and how the accidents happened.

From what I remember all the recent ones appear to have been hit by cars from behind whilst riding in the shoulder or emergency lane? Is alcohol involved at all?

Don't know if it will do any good but might help people to avoid similar situations in the future.

This is nuts - condelences to the family

Does anyone know what happened to the dude that fled the scene of the last death accident - his court appearance was meant to be 30 Jan in Simons Town, what was the outcome?

Sad fact of life is that you take you life in your hands when you ride on the road - and not just in SA either.

Remember reading a quote from LA that he's been knocked of his bike more often and in more places around the world than he'd like to remember.

Me, I just don't do it - more than I can help anyway. Not worth the risk. K@k one, but that's the reality of it.

Condolences to the family.

I'm just going to mini hijack this thread and by no means mean any disrespect to Colin, but I saw something yesterday coming down The Glen in Camps Bay that left me ice cold....

Three riders, (and I can identity their kit if I have to) were playing "chicken" with the traffic going down there....zig zagging over the road from one side to the other....right in front of a loaded on-coming tourist bus.....not to mention the bus coming from behind narrowly missing the one oke.....I'm still numb by that stupidity from cyclists....adult male cyclists....
