I want one of your scales...maybe I must get a new one!?

My Merida FLX 5000d comes in at 10.4kgs? HARDTAIL (very hard)

Frame 1390gr(weighed it). Full XTR group & wheels. Gobi seat, FSA carbon bar & post. FSA Stem. Maxxis tires and a bit of latex. no barends.

 

Why?.....new scale?(not Scott scale, bathroom scale!)

I agree OPC.im not to convinced about the epic expert at 10.5kg.especially with those wheels....using a bathroom scale is the least accurate method!!! a digital fishing scale is accurate.....

It was 9.25 kg out the box with Scwalbe Tyres and Scott Pilot Bars. The Crossmarks 2.1 UST worked well for me in the Epic so slapped them on with Stan's, took off the pilot bars and put on Ritchey WCS stem and Ritchey WCS 10 degree rizor bar. It now is more marathon ready at 9.82 kg.

One can get crazy, I have the spec for an 8.8 kg 150 mm Genius, but how good is the ride?

this is a prototype giant anthem x advanced. It will be raced in the epic by Rune Hoydahl. Claimed weight for the size Medium frame is 1998g incl. rear shock. more impressive than epic or spark i think.

Remember thats "claimed" weight!!and im not convinced its better than the spark or epic. Not sure what the spark weight is but it should be around the 2000gr mark.whats nice about the spark is that it has remote lockout with 2 settings.The epic is 2040gr including rear shock and flow control brain.The spesh uses no bb cups,saving about 50gr.Also has 100mm travel on the rear.

to be honest i can't really see anything on the giant that gives it an advantage.

claimed weights are normally quite accurate, and usually a prototype is heavier than the production version would be.

 

 

 

well, i can see a few advantages of the anthem x advanced over an epic.

 

1. "normal" headtube, so you can use a standard fork, without the need for special adaptors. al though by the look of the picture it looks like there is something funky going on with the new anthem headtube.

 

2. Same for the bb, you are not limited to using a spesh crank or one that is only compatible with shimano press fit bb.

 

3. it uses a fox rear shock, much more reliable than the spesh ones. a friend have been through more than 10 brains in the space of a year. also, the fox shock have more adjustments which means you can fine tune the ride as you like it.

 

 

 

I cant speak too much for the Scott, have not tried one yet, but by the size of the pivots it looks like it will be as stiff as a wet noodle.danlate2009-02-21 13:00:11

i don't really see how you can call these  "advantages".........

The anthem x,spark and epic are bikes purely built for perfomance.

The Tapered Steerer increases front end stiffness by up to 14%.The larger head tube also allows for a larger down tube.the larger down tube allows for a wider BB.that makes the BB 23% stiffer without sacrificing strength.These features are now common on most road bikes,including giant....

I agree with you on the rear shock.They have not been the most reliable so lets see how the new shock performs.The brain is a beautiful feature and works better than i had ever expected.I don't understand why fox don't put a remote lever.it's quite frustrating having to bend down to lock/unlock the shock.I am a great fan of Scott bikes.The spark is super stiff and the rear shock works really well.I have nothing against Giant,they one of the best brands in the world but to me it just seems they always a step behind on the technology side.

ok, i agree with you on the increase in stiffness. i just dont like the fact that you are limited as to what parts you can and can't use.

 

 

 

I dont realy see the need for lock out on the giant, mine rides the best with the shock open, even on the flats. yes the lockout is hard to reach, but i cant complain, i dont need it.
