Cable Cutter

I am looking to buy a cable cutter.

Do I need to buy one of those expensive Park Tool or BBB cable cutters or is there something non branded that I could get at a place like Midas?

Park tool is expensive, BBB is not. I don't think you will find it at Midas. Remember, it's not a sidecutter and worth the investment. Sometimes you just need to trim that extra 5mm off after the end cap came off and the end starts fraying.

FF, spend the money and get the right tool ... the Parktool as well as BBB are meant for the application; cuts the cable the right way, side cutters does not do the right job.

The Park Tool one was about R400, BBB about R280, I also saw a cheeper brand (dont recognise it) for about R200. I will probably go cheep (I will only use it a couple of times a year anyway.

Go to an electrical wholesaler or maybe Builders and get yourself a Crescent Sidecutter....The best cutter on the market and you won't be sorry.

FF just spend the extra R80 and get the BBB for R280; you will not regret it; it is most frustrating if the cable does not cut properly! KlapperKnop2009-02-20 00:39:20

The BBB one wears out after a few uses the only ones that works is the park tool or the pedros

that crescent side cutter is an alternative just make sure that you dont cut your cables skew with it

I agree after almost stuffing up my aligators - just get the right tool.

You mentioned using it a couple of times a year - well for that sort of use rather go Park Tool and have peace of mind for many seasons worth of cutting

Good tools are worth spending money on. They do the job properly and last a long time. Bad tools could cost you a lot of money in damaged parts in the long run.

I got a PRO one, not that expensive and been using it for more than 2 years and we do a fair bit of bike maintenance and it still works like the day I got it!

The ParkTool cable cutter is overpriced and overhyped. I see a lot of cable cutters since I buy them all the time for my courses and I lilke comparing them to a Parktool one I paid a fortune for in the days when the rand was 14 to the dollar.

No cable cutter cuts a brake cable outer perfectly. You still need to trim it afterwards on a grinder or with a file.

All cable cutters squash gear cable and you need to open it with a sharp tool.

All cable cutters of reasonable quality do a fine job of cutting cable inners, noticeably better than side cutters. The latter squashes the cable flat and requires a bit of rewinding afterwards.

The cutters sold by Acor, BBB, Raleigh and Irwine (general tool shops) are all the same product from the same factory. They're all fine. Their price ranges from R200 to about R135-00.

It must fit comfortably in your hand when open. The Parktool top of the range cutter is rubbish in this respect. Only King Kong can operate it with one hand and its close lock is a piece of wire, really crappy.

Get any of the other ones and don't be fooled into thinking they're of lower quality just because the jaws are made from thinner steel. It is only the cutting edge that cuts and a beefy jaw only comes to play when cutting thick wire in order to prevent it from bending open. Cable cutters dont do such jobs.
