My double daily dice with death is along the R27 and last night was the best yet.

Almost every car/bus that passed me gave me loads of room along the bollarded sections and the three container trucks all went into the right hand lane to pass me.

Keep your act together people, there is still hope for us cyclists/motorists Thumbs%20Up

(Hot weather + tired irritated drivers) + (argus training + summer sunlight hours) = MESS

In winter only the Hard ous go out and they are often more experianced..?

I think in winter people drive more carefully because of the rains, they are always more vigilant of oil on the surface etc.

alsothe lower sun makes visibility more challengine so generally they just takemore care.

bring on summer and the whole world goes mad! Rushing here, rushing there.

also in winter less high heels are worn so ther is more controlover the accelerator pedal...

More motorists tend to drive into each other over winter due to wet roads, heavy rains. You know when we can't see each other, then we must drive faster so that we can find each other in the mist, .....then ooops.

Cape Townians are social so we like to drive close to one another. We hate being lonely

about 2 Saturdays ago, we were returning home and there is this silly little traffic circle not far from where I live and a lady from a driving school and her learner got to the circle the same time as we did.....now remember the same rule apply to me as a bike on the road as if a car, yield to the right, lady instructer instructed her learner to continue driving through the circle totally disregarding us as bike riders in the circle at the time.....obviously I made a big racket.

But the point I'm trying to make is that the people teaching people do drive, don't have clue...Disapprove

Short Legs, I was thinking the same thing yesterday evening. About 99% give me plenty of room.. Something is working I think.. keep it up guys...

At least no one was killed.

I don't cycle a lot on the Cape Town roads (commuting a couple of times

a week between Kenilworth and the city centre and some training on the

weekends, mostly involving Constantia Nek, Suikerbossie, Camps Bay and

such), but I must say that things don't always seem that bad.  In terms

of general driving I find drivers from all over South Africa are pretty

much equally arrogant and inconsiderate.  I've noticed quite a few

cyclists being equally arrogant.  So are many motorcyclists (of which

I'm also one).

Comments like, "he'll just get a new one next week and do the same

thing again," are, I believe, part of the problem because they quickly

become blanket statements about large groups.  The guy may have lost

control because he was riding recklessly, but not necessarily and just

going fast is, to some extent, meaningless - I've seen people pose

massive danger to themselves and others at 20km/h.

There seems to be a fairly common assumption that everyone else, or at

least most everyone on the road is an idiot.  While this is clearly

true of some people, it's not true of all.  Last week while cycling to

work I needed to change lanes.  I looked over my shoulder (having yet

to find a shop that sells a mirror that fits my bike and doesn't weigh

a huge amount) and the driver coming up behind me noticed and slowed

down before I even indicated.

It's all very well to point fingers at the motorists and say they don't

drive proactively or whatever, but what proactive steps do most

cyclists take?  I see very few cyclists in Cape Town with front and

rear lights on their bikes, for instance.  I see cyclists on the

freeway.  I see cyclists riding abreast when there are cars around

(yes, I know that the given reason is that it's supposed to make the

cyclists safer, but it will most certainly manage to make drivers

angry, anger that will then be directed at cyclists in general).

I'm not really sure if things are improving or getting worse, but I do

know that they'll only get significantly better when both sides come to

the party.

Shortlegs, I mentioned the same thing in a posting wednesday... had great repect shown by Taxi's, cars and trucks.. giving us room when passing... always show my appreciation. Thanks Motorists.

Buses still give me the creeps.... just a tad too close for comfort.

Let's hope things are improving. Glad the cyclists involved are both ok!

To the 2 fools going through the red robot between Golden Acre and the train station at 6am today: thanks for doing your best to undo all of our efforts...@ssholes!

this is strange request I know but does anyone have the contact details of the guy that was riding the motor bike? A few colleagues are interesting in buying what's left of his bike to use to on their own..... serious.
