Is it cheeky to ask to build own new bike from LBS

Is it considered cheeky to want to build my own bike when purchasing new from LBS??

i don't think so, they will make their money on labour! done it a few times and i still remain a good customer as i always service my bikes with them and buy spares from them!

Some shops wont do it. Certain suppliers expect the shops to build the bike. Thus if there is any issues it can be sorted without hassles. If you take the box and go build it at your house and something goes wrong....it will be in your account.

No Problem at all, however, it would be cheeky to take components to a bike shop and ask them to build it for you. Not gonna lie, i've been tempted to do this as my LBS is pricy, and cajees and solomons are clueless about fitting parts

i disagree Daniel, i don't think there is anything wrong with taking parts to a shop and ask them to build it for you, part of their business is in servicing and charging you for their labour. As long as you support them with spares, servicing, etc at the same time, i think is perfectly right.

The bike shops get miff when you buy parts at shop C and ask shop F to fit them free .............

I just wish that there was a bike shop which was not a rip off, but knows how to fit parts well, and make them work first time. When that shop is found i will be happy.

 

The shops will get miff if you bring them parts and ask them to fit it. I dont take my steak to the restruant and ask them to cook it.

 

Sucks, but sometimes i feel that you just need to pay the extra bucks for the peace of mind.

Not at all. Just be 100% on how, where, what and when. Some part's warranty might void if not fitted by bike shop or qualified technician / mechanic / thingy mebob.

I think the theory is to get better service at the more expensive bike shops where they are able to service and fit the parts you buy from them properly vs a shop that is there just to sell you the stuff without expertise or service at a lower price.

Looki, i wqould happily pay R250 -350 bucks labour on my bike for fitting of parts, but i cannot justify a 500 price difference on a Cranset which costs me R1400 at one shop and R 1900 at the next.

 

Thats just me. Maybe i need to go on a bike Mechanic and repair course.

Do you mean they will make the money on the labour required to fix it after you've tried to assemble it yourself?
