  1. 1. What do you think of the ruling?

    • Way harsh, they lost 22 minutes anyway

    • Fair: they broke the rules

    • Lenient: weightweenies should not be rescued or encouraged

so burry pretzeled his wheel, max gave him his own dale whilst he ran up the hill and got a new front wheel off a spectator(epic tripper). Max then rejoined them at the service station and the four rode together like madmen till the end chasing a 22min timegap to the leaders.

Stander, who has been in the lead since the start of the race with teammate Sauser, was very upset after the day's stage. "I hit a tree, my wheel went sideways and the rim broke," he said. "Max Knox wanted to give me his front wheel, but our forks didn't match. That's why we exchanged bikes. Perhaps I've risked a bit too much. However, I'm still feeling great although we were pushing very hard to catch up."

As I said in the other thread, I don't know if it was intentional, but if Burry took the wheel from the day tripper, they would have received the 1 hour penalty. Songo.info got off with just a 15 minute penalty. The way I see it, while not lucky, they are fortunate to still be in the hunt.

Things happen for a reason and they are definitely fortunate enough to only get 15minutes but i am sure max knew the consequences of his actions so i think both time penalties were valid

If I posted exactly what I thought about the penalty as well as those looser teams who lodged the appeal, the sensor board would close this site down and I would be barred from ever touching a keyboard ever again. Angry

I totally understandwhy they got the penalty.

My question is, what were they supposed to have done. They are being penalized because they did something wrong.

What is the right way to have gone about this?

it's a bit of grey area really. What help did Max actually get? I wouldn't be surprised if Max's penalty was actually a separation one. Speculation indeed.

Bulls 2 received this in stage 2.

6. Separation Time Penalties (STP?s)

6.1. Riders must ride with their team partner at all times.

6.2. Riders who are separated by more than 2 minutes from their team partner at any point

in the race will receive a Separation Time Penalty (STP) of 1 hour.

Can I add:

"What rule did Burry break".

As far as he is concerned, he received assistance from a fellow competitor. All within the rules.

As far as I know, they swapped back. So Burry only road the middle section of the stage on a different bike. But I could be wrong.

Ok, the question was answered on another thread. He didn't ride the full distance of the stage on his bike.

I dont know why Burry didnt fix that wheel!! Im sure If he knew he was going to get a penelty he would have tried. I meen come on, I have fixed 5-10 wheels like that by whacking it against a tree or even kicking it !! EASY really come on!!

Burry obviously had no Idea Max was going to get outside assistance?? so Im my mind they could have made the penelty 10 minutes, since It seems all the top teams have had some kind of trouble along the way.

Also It seems the tech zones are such a bugger up (look at what happened to Kev and George) that It was very possible that there could have been some confusion.

Having said that, I dont know what the penalty should have been. God would have had the fairest answer, I will go pray about it.Wink

He did finish with the bike he started on...not that that is a rule anyway.

The main problem here is that the wheel he ended up riding with was from  someone outside the race.

If he got a wheel from anybody in the race it would have been ok,even if he finished with Max bike it would have been ok!!

The rules are clear on this..

he did finish on the bike he started on, he was just on the Canondale for a couple of k's. But back to the question - What was he supposed to do - pick his bike up and run with it to the next service point? i think it is a pity about the ruling as teh race has effectively been taken away from them while they have clearly deserved to be leading more than any other team

sorry - what i meant was he didnt use his bike the whole race.

otherwise he could start with a softtail and on the flat parts swap to a hardtail then later on pick up his softtail again

The way i see it the riders made the right decison, Burry could not finish on the borrowed bike as the rules state start and finish on same bike neither could he continue with busted wheel. Max would not have been able to fix the wheel without help from outside so rather than Burry get lumped with a DNF or 1 hour penalty Max took it on the chin. The penalty sucks though, would be interesting to hear who the complaining riders were, if indeed there were complaints.
