SPECIALIZED........not really.

After reading about the Specialized Rep in the rant and rave column titled "I am speechless", I am left wondering if I have made the smartest choice with regard to bike manufacturer.

I have a 2007 Tarmac S-Works Road bike- large (Gerolsteiner colour - black with blue trim),  and after having an accident and damaging the forks, I received "new" forks under a crash replacement warranty from Specialized.

On collection of the bike, I was shocked to see blue forks with red trim fitted to a black frame with blue trim. I tried to calm down and waited patiently for an explanation.  The sales assistant explained the situation to me -  in essence Specialized did not have a matching replacement fork for a bike that was a mere 2 years old.

By the way, did I mention that the fork replaced under a "crash warranty claim" was a used fork. How did I know this? Well, I managed to peel the colours off the fork.........yip red vinyl applied.

So after having spent well over R 100 000-00 on Specialized bikes, (2 x road bikes, 1 x mtb), I am left wondering........... why?

A 2 year old bike and I cant get matching replacement forks???????????

If anyone at Specialized has a solution to my problem, please mail me or alternatively, if there is anyone who has matching forks for sale, whether bike shop owner or private person - please help.

Thanks

Ex-Specialized Fan

wow, imagine getting parts replaced free of charge on some sort of policy that covers me in the event of a crash.

that would be nice...

Paid for the part, but not the full retail price. No such thing as a freeby .....that would be very nice.

Thing is Specialized is a decent brand and makes great products, it's just their representation through local agents/reps that's the problem, and giving them a bad name. The product is still good. Mail Specialized head office with photo's etc and a explanation of everything and heck perhaps even links to this thread and the "I am speechless" one.

Pretty much the same problem that I have with KTM South Africa, that's why I ride a GS.

oh, i'm sorry, the term "crash replacement warranty/policy" created the wrong impression.

i read the other thread and thought, how on earth can a rep be so arrogant? note i say rep, because i am willing to bet money that specialized USA has a different outlook!

write to specialized in the USA, but do it on paper (not e-mail) if possible, it makes more of an impression.

find out who the CEO / MD is and writedirectly to him - be sincere and outline your dissapointment.

case in point:

1. the lenses on my oakley's have a coating that started peeling (after 5 years). all the shops around here told me i had to buy replacement lenses @ R1000.

i thought no way!

i put the lenses in an envelope along with a very sincere letter explaining why i bought their brand, and how dissapointed i am now, and posted it back to oakley in california. i didnt ask for my money back or a replacement, i merely asked them to inspect the situation.

two months later i get a package from Fedex with brand new oakley's inside - not just new lenses,  new sunglasses.

2. my wife's G-shock packed up after swimming. this is a watch that has "water resist 100m" engraved on it. all the the shop assistants tried to argue with me over the definition of "water resist" vs "waterproof", and two of them told me that steam in a shower is at a higher pressure than ambient atmospheric pressure (like a pressure cooker)....

i realised that i wasnt getting anywhere.

again, i wrote a very sincere letter to casio international explaining why i bought their brand, and how dissapointed i am now.

4 weeks later i receive an e-mail from the local dealer saying i can collect my new watch.

dont waste your time with reps and local "agencies", they dont have the reputation of the company at heart, only their own pockets.

go directly to the company involved, preferably the MD.

ps. dont even get me started on KTM sa, the most arrogant people you will ever deal with.

Crash replacement warranty?

I had a Tarmac which was trashed in an accident. Thanks to the massive price increases, the insurance was insufficent to replace (I ended up buying a carbon Raleigh, which, except for the colour, I really like).

I was never aware of such a warranty. Is it something that you have to pay for or does it come automatically with the bike? How does it work? I managed to replace my Bell helmet under a crash replacement warranty and I only paid 30% of a new price.

I feel that the Specialised dealer where I bought the bike should have informed me of this. He also did the quote for insurance, so he knew of the accident. Perhaps I could have got another Specialised at an affordable price.

Listen my MTB buddy is 120 kilograms and broke 3 specialized Epic Marathon frames. Each time the frame was swopped by his Specialized LBS.

After braking the 3rd frame he was fed up. He eventually send emails to Specialized USA and they replaced his frame with a stump jumper expert and is very happy after this so the specialized USA is willing to help.

Just my 2 cents worth.

A tjommie of mine had a gerolsteiner Roubaix, it cracked and they tried to blame her.

found pics of a similar bike on the web and it also cracked in a similar position on the frame.

and they siad they didn;t have a production issue.

well maybe it's a design issue then.

I know what brand of bike I'll never drop cash on.

It's just marketing bling with little substance.

Same with their brain shock. I had 3 that collapsed while riding. They kept on blaming me, telling me that I dont know how to use it. Strange that the fox brain I have is still lasting after 3 years.

Glad to see I was not the only one here with a problem with KTM.Nish42009-07-30 01:40:45

Why not just purchase a brand new fork at retail price which no doubt will come in any colour you like. It's not Spesh's fault you crashed or that the bike broke. Sounds like they may have been trying to help you out there (no crash policy I know about) and that there might have been an affordability issue.

I have had warranty claims (new frame, who knows how many Brains) and they have all been sorted no problem.

I just ride with a helmet. No warranty issues with this Brain. Know I wont get one in the same colour.
