I built a set once. had steel rollers. weighed a ton. made a terrible racket when being used. other than that they were fine.

Sneak into your LBS with a tape measure and get the sizes. I'd use 150 dia plumbing downpipe for the rollers, with machined end caps with cartridge bearings and maybe a support in the middle, and 40 x 20 rectangular tube for the rails. Just make sure your axles are beefy enough.

Check prices though, it might be cheaper to buy a 2nd hand set.

if you want I could measure mine up for you and post the measurements?

That would be awsome if you can do that for me.

Thanks

I used to work for a company that manufactured conveyor rollers for the mines (Dia.63mm and bigger). The basic concept was a steel tube, 2 bearings, end caps, and a solid steel shaft.

I've approached them about this a few weeks back - using stainless steel tubing (say 3CR12, or even 409 - automotive exhaust tube grade) instead of mild steel. They haven't indicated anything yet, but I'm sure if the quantities are reasonable, the pricing should be good too.

Making the frame should be easy enough - using square tubing. The only component I wouldn't know where to get would be the belt used to drive the front wheel.

Might be able to use a motorcycle drive belt?If I get the length required I can see what is available?

Possible, but not sure if you'll need something that staunch. The one on my old rollers was just a big o ring, basically - probably about 5mm thick, and ran in a groove on the edge of the roller

I built a set once (about 15 years ago) when they weren't too freely available. If it was today, I wouldn't bother as they are cheaper than the effort required to build them! The machining of the hubs (if you don't have something ready-made) can push the cost way out.

The "belts" on the commercially available units (mine is a Tacx) appear to simply be large o-rings. From a quick search on the internets, it seems that o-rings up to 740mm inside diameter are available, so Bearing Man should be able to get hold of an appropriate size o-ring for you.

Obviously, you don't want to buy o-ring material, cut to size and glue it... smiley1.gif

Interested to see how this project develops.

Cheers,
