I know this is not the NORM for this thread, but I just like it  so much!!!!!

 

S-Works MTB, probably around 90/91 (I'd welcome any info), Ritchy brakes, XT components, RaceFace cranks and Hope hubs on Mavic Ceramic hoops, with colourful anodised Ti spokes.

 

Must have been absolutely top of the range 25 years ago. 

 

And it rides like a dream (wish I did).

Hi Everyone,

 

After having followed this thread for a very long time, I have today bought my first real classic steel bike (picked up at a pawn shop), apart from those like a Cosmos, Peugeot and Le Jeune I owned when I was much younger.

It's a late eighties, early nineties Cicli Zini Campione Mark 2 (62cm centre BB / Top Tube) built with Reynolds 525 tubing (probably built by Gotty Hansen), full Shimano 600 group set (7 speed) and Mavic Open 4CD rims on Shimano 600 hubs. Mostly original parts, except for saddle and pedals, with original paint and decals.

Typical paint chips and scuff marks for a bike circa 20 to 25 years of age. Bought it for R1k.

Got a couple of questions though.

Do I fully restore (repaint), or keep as original, with a good clean-up, service and touch-up here and there. Also, is it possible to re-anodize the Mavic rims, or does one leaf as is, which adds to the patina.

Your feedback and help will be kindly appreciated - really excited to get started with my project.

Beautiful machine and a score at the price. IMHO i would just clean it up it really does look in bad shape at all and the fact that it has a complete 600 groupset is an absolute score. well done. hoping you will enjoy many sweet rides on it.

Thank you for advise Kamaalo - also thinking of keeping it all original. Will post an update once done.

I agree with Kamaalo. I would completely strip the bike and then wash and clean each part repacking all the moving parts like headset, jockey wheels (don't open the casing holding the RD spring), wheel hubs and BB. When frame still bare go to hobby shop and match the paint with little pots of paint which you use to touch up major scrapes. Use small brush. Finish with a coat or two of car wax polish and then rebuild the bike. If you lucky you will find new hoods for the brake levers. A nice old Rolls or classic saddle and new bar tape and tyres and you have a nice ride.

Regarding the Mavic rims. Leave them as they are. Unfortunately most CD4's and others wore through, probably due to the hard brake block compound in the 80's. To improve braking on the 600's, which was good at the time, get some soft compound aftermarket brake blocks

As part of a package to buy a Gios Super Record frame I acquired this early 80's FW Evans which I rebuilt over the holidays. Needs new rubber and some mudguards (anyone know a SA lbs that stocks guards?).
