MintSauce Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 Currently running Kenda Nevegal on the front and Blue Groove on the back. Similar(f-ing high) cornering capabilities but the Blue Groove has better straight line traction on steep climbs. Best cornering combination I've tried for aggressive technical riding and descending.Think I might 2nd Lefty's comment re Python's being the best allround tyre. Used them for about 2yrs. Really liked them but wanted something with a bit more cornering grip. Had to sacrifice on weight, but that's ok with me. Gotta watch the sidewalls though as I never ever finished the tread before cutting the sidewall. Not really a weakness, more a matter of not using it for it's intended purpose i think. Would be interested to see how a thinner nevegal would perform, maybe a 1.9 as opposed to the 2.3 I'm currently running.Should make for a very good combination of grip/weight
AndreZA Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 I read in What MTB UK that they recommend the 1.95 Hutchinson Bulldogs for their muddy conditions. Apparently it cuts through the mud to get to the hard stuff instead of riding/floating over the mud.
Buff Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 I'm currently running Conti Speed Kings (beaded). The price is very good at R160 but wear is high. They hook up very well in the damp, compact & loamy kinda terrain (they really impressed me on the Argus mtb ride) and seem to shed mud rather well but they suck on dry gravel technical trails (eg. Zevenwagt & Grabouw). As an allrounder on the Conti side I'd vote the Explorer as the better tire.
casspir Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 I use Bontrager Revolt Super X at this stage. Quite surprised at the good wear I am getting. regards casspir
GoLefty!! Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 I've not had a problem with sidewalls on the UST Python. The GoldMember version yes but those are silly light. The New Pyhton with taller side knobs seems to have solved some of the Pythons lack of cornering bite but to be honest I liked the predicatable if limited cornering ability of the original. what is lovely about the python is thaty the casing is so pliable and has controled rebound that it feels like a bigger tyre (ok they are big even for a 2.00) Kenda Nevegal is also a great trail tyre but it is one of the heaviest rolling tyres I have ever used. Even using a DTC tyre and converting to stans did little to remedy the poor rolling. They do stick like **** to a rabbits fur though. Kenda Karma is excellent. 2nd best tyre on my prefered list and I think these Vredestein Killer Bee is at #3.
Marius Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 la la la, I'm getting the Kenda Karma DTC la la la!!!
Haga Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 Just tried a set of Vredstein Killer Bee's this weekend, great for road riding. Biggest load of crap for MTB'ing. Destroyed them in 20k's. Slashed side walls and no real grip worth mentioning in hard technical riding. Guess i'll stick to the Schalbe's, dying to try some Kenda's but no one i saw Friday had the Nevegal 2.3.
Willehond Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 For the money and Sout African conditions the TT's are really a no-brainer. Great on hard pack, rocks and sandy tracks. For muddy conditions I don't use them, but with their low rolling resistance and GREAT PRICE I really think they are the best value for money. Also, have you noticed how most guys who are pro-TT's don't even mention the price?! Says a lot
ChrisH Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 Who stocks Kenda's in the northern burbs? I bought a pair of Kenda Nevegal UST's from Cycle Factory Warehouse in Montague Gardens two weeks ago.
ChrisH Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 And ?! And that's where you can get them in the Northern 'Burbs.
AndreZA Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 Well, I just destroyed my rear TT this morning. On my way to work I went over something and cut a slit about 30mm through the tyre and sludge tube. Had to push the bike home for about 1.5km and took the car to work. Now I have an excuse to buy something else.
Marius Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 How much did you pay for the Nevegals Chris?? I hear the Karma's wear pretty fast and that I can expect to change them every 2-3months? That's ok, I've been waiting close to a year to change the Maxxiss CrossMarks, those tyres are not for some1 wanting to try out new things every few months.Have you guys have any experiance with the Kenda Tomac Small Block Eight, they look pretty mean, nice and wide and weighs just about the same as the Maxxis CrosMarks!! Buff Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 And while on the topic, has anyone tried Maxxi MiMo's?
I FLY Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 Have you guys have any experiance with the Kenda Tomac Small Block Eight' date=' they look pretty mean, nice and wide and weighs just about the same as the Maxxis CrosMarks!! [/quote'] I also like the look of them. Yolandi Speedy rode the Epic on them and had no problems. I am going to try them next.
