When my LBS earns my money and gives it to me as a present then I will feel guilty giving it to his competition. Till then I will spend my money on what I want and where I want with none of this weird guilt that cyclists seem to have about it. That's like feeling you have to have sympathy sex with an ex girlfriend.

I have just received a shipment of stuff from Chain Reaction and will feel nothing to ask my local (and brilliant) LBS to fit the parts. In fact they will even collect my bike and the new parts from my house for no extra cost as part of their service. They charge premium rates for a fantastic job, I pay them, everyone is happy. And they've never asked me for sympathy sex either.

ChrisH, can I have your ex's phone number please. Wink

Anyway, I asked my LBS to fit stuff that I bought over the net. They stuffed up the whole process and in the end I did not pay for the fitment and they gave me some tools so that I can do some of the tasks myself. I don't think I will get away with it again.

MuXmAn,  your lbs gives you great service and advice as well as discount. Why go to Cajees? I've bought two bikes from them and have had nothing but problems!

deliver this saving to the consumer... Simple economics... Embarrassed

If they were intentionally delivering this saving to the consumer they would not be marking thier stuff up by 200% and then ripping off the poor guy who knows nothing about cycling and pays their advertised price. So with this in mind these guys are definately no saints to the industry.

I have seen it many times that the poor guy thats new to cycling get ripped of by these guys. If you dont ask you dont get a discount either.

And dont let these guys close to any bike for servicing.

I am just the opposite really, I buy very little locally and import just about everything I need, and I dont feel in the least bit guilty.

Its nothing personal, its just my time is limited, I have no interest in becoming my LBS owners best mate and its my honest experience that 9 times out of 10 these shops are run on such a shoestring budget, they carry minimal stock and unless its a tube, it usually has to be ordered it in for you, which means you have to drive back wards and forwards in the traffic for nothing.

To be honest, I dont care where I buy something, I dont expect favours from any shop, I buy where it suits me on the day, and from my experience, Cajees has the stock on hand, so if you need a basic item, going there first is at least a guarantee you will usually walk out with it.

Which cant be said for too many other stores.

I havent been to all of them but the chaps in the Four ways branch have always been polite and friendly to me.

Unfortunately some cyclists spend hours picking their LBS's brains on what the best bike for them is, get measured up, everything... and then bugger off to the lowest bidder for the bike. If you are going to take up hours of your LBS's time, at least have the common decency to buy from them.

I haven't read the whole thread, but my experience:

Bought a Rockshox Tora from them. Price was really good, but when it arrived, it was in a nondescript box with no manual. I CONFIRMED with them that it was a 130mm travel, yup for sure. Not knowing enough, I couldn't find any way to check this. 6 months later, I now know a bit more and confirmed it is a 100mm travel shock. This is disgusting service!

My hubbie went in there the other day for gloves and Squirt lube. No-one wanted to help him, and when he eventually cornered someone, their credit card machine was broken so they couldn't help him. He walked straight out. I will not go there again, can't believe how they will mislead people.

both points true - I was one of them...Angry and thats why I'll never go to a Cajees again. Never, you can rip me off, I will find out about it, and you'll never see me again. I'll go and pay more somewhere else, you can be next to my house, I'll go to a shop a 1000 kms away.

difference between your (decent) LBS and cajees is the first question you're asked enquire about buying a bike:

LBS: what kind of riding do you want to do?

cajees: how much you want to spend ? and all?

also: most shops flog tubes for R20. cajees have got them at R40, but will knock them down to R30. massive saving!

then there was the idiot who told me bmx tubes only come in one size: and a 20 X 2.125 tube would do for a 20X1 3/8 tyreAngry

too true. had a guy come in to the lbs i work at for two saturdays in a row. found his size, advised on all the extras he needed to budget for. then nothing for two weekends. on the third he pitches up with the model of bike i'd advised him to buy which he got from cajees. guy thought we'd sort out - gratis! - the bits and bobs that had worked themselves loose (ie hadn't been tightened properly by the guys at cajees) because we stocked  the same bikes. he tried to suggest that loose components were a manufacturing problems covered under warranty. funny how we haven't seen him since the bollocking the boss gave him for wasting our timeAngryhe did send his dad along (pathetic, i mean the dude's in his late 20s) later to try bully us into fixing his idiot son's bikeConfused

I've heard this from a bike shop as well. This yougnster wanted a bicycle, went and bought it at Cajees, but now , wants the bike serviced somewhere else where he could also got the bike he got. But his dad insisted Cajees. I told him, help him, but charge his arse off... he's either gonna pay, or not. If he doesn't like it, he can p- off.

my final word on the cajees issue. they're not the only rip-off artists.

for the best advice, go to an LBS owned and staffed by people who ride. you'll know the bike shop has your interests at heart if they refuse to let you leave the shop with your first bike without forcing you to buy a helmut.

I have found them to be a bit on the expensive side..Especially on the smaller items. And their shop layouts does tend to be a bit confusing.

But as Holy Roller says they are not the only rip off artists. So as with so many other cycle shops...Know your prices and choose the shop that gives you the best service.
