Squeaky cleats

ConfusedAlthough this problem has been discussed before on this forum long ago, now that I have the problem, I can't remember what the cures were.....I recently put a pair of Look "296 Elite" pedals on my bike and the compatible cleats on my shoes and shortly after they started to squeak when putting a bit of pressure on them.

I have tried smearing the contact area on the pedal with a little motor car bearing grease, normal oil, soap (read that once), and various other lubricants before going for a ride, but none last more than a few kilometres and the irritating squeaks start again.

Any other suggestions?

Get Times...You'll also be able to compete in the sprints without pulling a foot out!

Silicone oil? Or silicone glue spread thinly?

If your cleats squeak, it means they are thirsty. Spray them wit whatever you have in your bottle and the problem is solved for the rest of the ride.

That might be it. Using generic look cleats may cause the squeeking. Something about the plastic being to hard.

Try use some Spray and Cook as a temporary measure - that being said genuine Look pedals and cleats should not squeak so if they are then there is something wrong. Does the 296 cleat have the "white teflon" type material like the Keo and Delta cleats have, this was supposed to reduce the chance of squeaks and premature wear of the pedals.

Be carefull with lubricating the cleats as it tends to make the cleat come out of the pedal easier than what you would be used to...Ouch

Using non genuine Look,Shimano cleats in any pedal system will cause untold problems.BBB inluded make generic cleats for both systems and they dont work properly and actually cause more issues .

only one way to fix without getting it "slipped" out because of oil or lube.

Take a candle, and put some hot candle wax around the cleats of the shoe. The paddle will ensure the access brake off and the rest will dampened the squeaks

Lost the text that was supposed to be with the pic. Pedals are real Look and the cleats have a ceramic insert at the front and back where it clips to the pedal. I think the squeaking is at the flat contact area between cleat and pedal.

I will try the various suggestions and give feedback if I come to a satisfacrory conclusion. Thanks to all.

I can't get this pasting of pics etc right!!!

Lost the cleats pic in the last post.

The dark patches on the cleats show where there is contact with the pedal and where I suspect the squeak originates. The cleats are "well used" but that is not a function of the squeak!!!!

I've experienced the dreaded Look Squeak with three different models, all of them using the correct cleat. New cleats will help... for a while. Lubricant

(including spit) will work... for a while. The most effective was some silicone-based stuff, but then again it felt like I was constantly about to slip out of the cleat.

On the other hand, if you want to drive your riding partners crazy, nothing beats The Squeak, especially when it mutates into The Creak.
