Parktool Junk

Hmm, I am just interested to know why people insist on buying bike specific tools.?

Okay, obviously, specialised tools are excluded, but why on earth buy a Park Tool cable cutter, or a Park Hammer and mallet combo, etc  when you can buy a Stahlwille, Gedore, Craftsman or other Major industrial / Automative tool brand for the same price or cheaper, is designed for the industrial world and  will probably carry a "lifetime" replacement guarantee.??

Just seems odd to me.

I've  allways liked the parktool range of tools BUT for anyone out there cosidering buying a parktool multitool like the IB3 be warned' date=' I fitted 2 chains and the chaintool is so badly damaged thats its basically useless.[/quote']

I also bought one of those - they're cr*p, and I LIKE parktool. Frankly I think they should withdraw it from their range.  For multitools I really like what I've seen (+ used) from Lezyne recently. I guess the rule is to leave parktool in the workshop.

4) ParkTool cable cutter. Requires a giant to operate since the cutter's handles are a mile apart. It also has the crappiest closing clip I've ever come across. It always pops off.

I'll agree with you there.
I bought mine new. Since then I've cut six brake cables and outers and six derailleur cables and outers. It can no longer cut straight through a cable. Instead it makes a messy cut and leaves two or three cable strands uncut and jammed between the blades. Tightening the bolt has not helped.

What's a good alternative?

PRO - I put one in all the toolkits that go to my students.

A good electicians side cutter. I have a king tony and it cuts like a dream.

The chain cleaner is a load of ****' date=' used it twice and turfed it.

So toothbrush and engen cleaner works well.

A good sidecutter is OK, but not as nice as a good cable cutter. The latter just does the job better. If I were to only cut the odd cable for my own bike and I only had one bike, I'd go with a sidecutter. But a good sidecutter is more expensive than a dedicated cable cutter.

A sidecutter works even better if you heat the small section where you are going to cut with one of those small mini butane torches. Even a crappy sidecutter then cuts the cable, but a side cutter will not cut the brake  cable housing or derraileur cable housing. It will just press it flat before cutting.

the ib-3 isn't the best of tools. i had to do some trailside maintenance yesterday and got frustrated by how short the 5mm hex wrench was. it was hard to tighten some bolts. as far the chain tool goes, i haven't had hassles with it on the trails. used it twice, but only to break a chain, not fit one. just fitted a powerlink afterwards. normally carry a dedciated chain tool in the camelbak anyway - made by super b, i think.

Cut it with some old cable inside then it cannot press flat.....

Darn why didn't you post this thread a week ago Angry

I'm waiting for my PT cable cutter to arrive from the states. At the price you pay for those thingies, (ok a bit cheaper from there) I really hope it performs better than suggested here

Goto Sportsmans Warehouse and get their Cable Cutter for R120 - its really great quality and at that price you can replace every year. Heck I even used it to on our washing line cable LOL

I have a Pedros one which is awesome.

Someone told me you can also get a decent cable cutter at Builders

Warehouse for a fraction of the price...
