I nearly rode over one in Wilderness the other week...on the gravel section from Die Vlug through to Knysna...

I was alone and didnt see it till the last minute.. was about that size and also quite yellow...

needless to say I switched the Auto Pilot off.

We found this baby lying on the warm concrete one night and let me tell you, he wasn't afraid of us at all! I'm always careful where I walk at night and I always need light, I found this one with the light from my cell phone.

I almost pi$$ed my pants, was just glad I never stepped on it..

I've had 2 encounters with snakes in the last few weeks. Yesterday morning there was a huge Rinkhals on the sand road leading into the service entrance of Serengeti. I almost rode over him. A truck had stopped and was hooting as I approached and waving out the window. I was so busy watching the truck and trying to see what they were waving for that I didn't see the snake and rode past it. I turned back and when I stopped next to the truck, there was the snake coiled in the middle of the side of the road I had just passed. Still dunno how I missed it. Good thing I didn't ride over it.

2 weeks ago on the Emperors route behind the runway I heard a nosie and caught something out the corner of my eye. I stopped and just off the single track was a hugh Rinkhals with his head raised. Was really fat and dark. I must have scared it as I passed coz it was facing away from the track. While I watched it it slithered off into the thicker grass.

Watched Steven Austin's Seven deadly strikes show last night. Love snakes.

I will never forget this one time when I rode past a sun bathing snake and it shot off like a rocket' date=' I sh@t myself. Heart rate went through the roof, he he he.

Hmm, also watched it - hate snakes, he makes it look real easy but that Cobra still bit him on the finger anyway.

Lots of conflicting info on what to do if bitten, I hike a lot and went to a seminar by the SANPARKS once, their suggestion was to not suction the bite at all but simply to strap above the bite, if you can identify the snake and have the appropriate anti venom inject as soon as possible, if you cant identify the snake try and get a photo of it to take with to the hospital.

Whereas when Steve got bit by the cobra he immediately "bled" the wound, applied suction, injected anti venom and bound the arm tightly - very contradictory indeed, but it worked for him anyway.

Of course if an adult black mamba bites you, its all a moot point, cos you probably wont even have time to find all the stuff in your back pack before you keel over!.

Didn't Steve Austin used to be the Texas Rattlesnake on WWE??
