Some good points guys... thanks for your input!

Definitely going to give Windows 7 a try, might dual-boot Linux and 7.

But getting back to Win7: Microsoft has a record of bad and good releases, they actually go through predictable cycles:

Windows95 - GOOD - seldom a problem

Windows98 - BAD - introduced us to BSOD, some of us thought it was a screensaver

Windows98SE - GOOD - once again, seldom a problem

WindowsME - BAD - once again our friends BSOD is back and it loved viruses

WindowsXP - GOOD - seldom a problem

WindowsVista - BAD - Claims it was the worst but we oh so forgot ME & 98

Win7 - GOOD ...

So Win8, it will be the next one to skip.

thats like saying there's no diesel tank on my petrol car.

directx is a bunch of drivers and frameworks specifically for windows.

the open equivalent is openGL

i THINK the proper context Jrussel intended was the fact the majority of games run on DirectX, not OpenGL. Linux is a great workhouse, but all inclusive fun is not one of them.

Ok cool' date=' and Linux costs? [/quote']Free - as in beer. You can pay a couple of bucks for the CD, or else if youbuy a commercial package with support, CDs, documentation,..., it's a couple of hundred bucks.go to the Web site, download the ISO image, burn a CDor DVD and install (or just run from the CD/DVD)...

How big is the download??

no download SilverShadow if you request a copy of Ubunut. Takes a while, but you get it eventually. Easily one of the most popular distributions out there at the moment.
