Tandem indoor trainers

I received question via my site if there is an indoor tandem specific trainer or if any good indoor trainer will do. I am not too sure how to answer this cause the only indoor training I have done was a 45 min session twice a week at the LBS doing light intervals.

Anyone out there with more experience using tandems and indoor trainers who can help me?

No they do NOT work due to the long lenght of the frame. The "leverage"or bending moment created is way too large. We experienced undue flexing of the frame and the pilot was swaying around alarmingly. This is just our experience. Other tandem pairs might experience it differently.

Maybe you could try again and take a video this time. I might even pay to see it.

Oh did I mention I was the pilot...... well the experience scared my tandem!!!! I am as Big as my name!!!!!! Cannot see that it will be less scary with anorexic hairless cycling dudes!!!!!! I discussed it with our tandem group after this and they all said I should have my head read!!!!!!! I bought a welder and are now developing a tandem spinning cycle!!!!!!!

The only little problem that we experienced was that the indoor trainer was only just big enough the handle the back wheel. Had the wheel clamp/brace been 10mm smaller it would not have fitted.

Lets engineer a set of rollers for a tandem... I'll pay good money to see someone (ok, two someones) ride a tandem on rollers...

A friend had a set of rollers at varsity. One day he was training ... lost concentration, climbed off the rollers and drove straight through the door of his room. He was quite hurt with a lot of scratches bruises and splinters. Could be a hit on Americas Funniest Home movies!!!!!!

a blind colleague of mine uses an idt to stay fit, with his tandem... but then he sits on it alone when doing so.. only time he's ever piloted...

Just out of interest, why doesnt he use a normal bike on the trainer? Suppose it would be a waste of money buying a bike JUST to use on the IDT....

Is it wrong of me to picture your colleague on his tandem, alone, on rollers? I ask, cause a friend of mine says it's wrong to laugh at people in wheelchairs, so I said "even if they're doing something funny?"

I saw a blind guy walk into a hole they were digging in the road once. It took me about 10 minutes to stop laughing...

Having said that, If I ever have some disability and I do something stupid, I expect people to laugh at me...
