I know Disco had quality issue in the last and prior to that generations, but the current one?

My Series II Disco broke down on me in SA, Swaziland, Mozambique AND

****ing Lesotho. It was an awesome car, but ****ing useless for a

trip. The last time I was prepared to leave the keys in the ignition and

walk out...

 

I now have a Patrol and go away with some confidence that my vehicle

is the least of my problems. It's a flippin' tank - unstoppable...

If any one is interested in my opinion, I also looked at the Fortuner.

It is excellent value for money, but I didn't want to be killed by

an excellent value for money vehicle.

 

I have found the Patrol to be fantastically stable on tar and dirt.

 

I also looked at the Pajeros and was very impressed with them.

The fancy Toyota Prados are for poncing around Sandton, but I

was impressed by the real 4x4 Landcruiser without all the

cr@p...

A Toyota Land Cruiser is the most capable off road vehicle ever built... end of story. It doesn't matter if it is a 1980 GX or a 2009 Prada. The Hilux in 4x4 is just as good.

We multiply that number by 1,000 to get kind of a workable value.

For example, if a 110-inch-wheelbase vehicle goes 52 inches up the ramp, its RTI number would be 472 ([52 ? 110'] x 1,000). Obviously, a higher RTI number translates into better conformability to the terrain. A perfect score would be 1,000, indicating that the vehicle can go as far up the ramp as its wheelbase is long without lifting a tyre. No standard vehicle has reached 1000 but Range Rovers come close. A few modified machines have indeed reached the perfect score and beyond."

TZmbt - you should take your tuna and go and do some 4X4 routes! Not the crazy stuff' date=' but the ones as seen on 4X4 veldroetes and the ones shown in SA 4X4, Wegry and Leisure Wheels, which I'm sure you read. It's great fun, and if you know your car, you shouldn't break anything.

I use the Fortuner as a yardstick - if the tuna makes it on a route, my troll should not even break a sweat...LOL

I use my car to get places. It's just a very useful tool to me. My bicycle on the other hand...

or... it makes them feel superior because they chose something else and how could anybody else choose THAT (kind of how I feel about Land Rover owners. I mean they break, all the time. Don't they? Well, I am sure they do. They must. Everyone says so...)

 

I have been using my Fortuner for nearly four years and it has never broken. Never got stuck. Never tried to kill me or my two young children or my beloved wife. Thats all I know. Thats all I have to go on.

If it was a piece of **** I would say "it is a piece of ****" and sell it. Brand loyalty means nothing to me. I owe Toyota nothing. They took my money and I took their car. That's it

A Range Rover's RTI does seem like an interesting benchmark. One could discuss it at length whilst waiting for the recovery team / spares to arrive.

 

 

 

Landrover : A car that'll take you into Africa (but you'll need a lift back home...)

Originally they blamed the Grabber Tyres and did a recall on them.

The tyre shop down the road had around 300 Grabber tyres they had replaced.

Seems as though it is a design flaw and nothing to do with the tyres.

Or you could google RTI, and the first 8 hits all started with "RTI doesn't mean anything in terms of a vehicles off road performance"... or some such...LOL

Another one bit the dust yesterday afternoon on the N1 north at the New road onramp. Highway was closed for about one hour. Coffin on wheels.

Was it a Fortuner? Saw the news - a family critically injured.  Solo accident - no other cars.

Maybe they are like the old Harvards - Apparently if you hit the gas too hard on take off and are not on the ball the big radial engine causes an immediate right turn!

 

I think that there are many people that will drive these things for ages without incident - but put the right set of conditions together and over you go?
